The long wait is over, Giffnock Soccer Centre made their long awaited return to competitive action on Saturdat against Westerton United at Williamwood High School in what can only be described as horrendous weather conditions.
Having played a few friendlies over the festive period including a savage beating at the hands of the Coaches & Parents (Sorry boys couldn't resist) and two impressive victories over Airdrieonians and East Kilbride the boys were raring to go.
The boys started the match in a 4-5-1 formation and suprisingly chose to play against the wind in the first half.
Snow, wind and freezing conditions greeted the boys as the game kicked off and the weather was to remain like this for the duration of the game.
Eight minutes in and Giffnock grabbed the lead, a through ball found J. Shields at the edge of the box, the midfielder did well to skip past his marker and find M. Connolly inside the box, the striker took one touch and cooly slotted the ball low into the net for the opener, 1-0.
On thirty five minutes it was two, good link up play down the left involving J. Shields & E. Ross resulting a great through ball by Euan to the feet of M. Connolly who unselfishly squared the ball to J.Reid for the easy finish at the back post. There was to be no more scoring in the first half.

Giffnock had the howling wind behind them in the second half and looked to press home their good first half performance by grabbing a few more goals to end the match as a contest.
Forty three minutes in and it was 3-0, a brilliant counter attack from a Westerton corner saw E.Ross play a defense splitting pass to the onrushing F. Slade who sprinted clear of the defender and passed the ball into the net.
Slade was to grab a quick fire double on fifty four minutes when a wonderful cross from J. Reid was met at the near post by the hitman with a deft glancing header into the net.
The game was over now as a contest and Giffnock were hungry for more.
Sixty minutes in and it was number five, a brilliant cross in from the left by J. Shields found J. Adair at the back post who cushioned a beautiful right foot finish past the keeper for his now customery goal.
Two minutes later and Giffnock grabbed their sixth of the day, a nice through ball by M. Connolly released J. Adair who's effort was well saved by the Westerton Goalie but C. Smith was on hand to bravely turn the ball home at the back post.
The scoring for the day was completed on sixty minutes when a poor throw by the Westerton keeper was intercepted by E. Ross who lashed the ball home from the edge of the box for number seven.
