The second match of the day in the West Region finals was the under 14s final between Rossvale and Celtic Juniors. The match was set alight in the first minute when a header from a free kick was glanced in by Craig Friel. From then on the game was very even, but on the fifty-second minute Rossvale doubled their lead thanks to a header by the Captain Conor McBrearty. The game was eventually wrapped up five minutes from time when Calum Holland swung in a corner which was turned into the goal by a Celtic defender.

Rossvale stormed into the lead less than one minute into the game. They were awarded a free kick on the half way line which was placed into the box by Rob Fowler, there was some debate about who scored but it appeared that Craig Friel was the one who managed to glance a header past Matthew Boyle in the Celtic goal.

Rossvale nearly doubled their lead in the fifth minute when Conor McBrearty found himself through on goal, but, Boyle was able to turn the ball around and hit the ball out for a corner.

It was then Celtic’s turn to attack in the tenth minute. Andrew Ruoddie hit a strong shot from twenty yards out but his effort was well saved by Alan Devlin in the Rossvale goal.

A few minutes later Rossvale thought that they had put themselves two up but, after a great passing move and a good finish by Christopher McLeod, the assistant referee had his flag up and the goal did not stand.

There was only one chance the rest of the half and that fell to Rossvale five minutes before the end of the first half. A superb through ball was played by Robbie Brown towards McLeod who provided a good cross but Celtic defender Ciaran Leonard was able to clear and prevent his side conceding another before half time.

An even first half was brought to a close – both teams played well and it was anyone’s second half.

The second half sprung to life within a few minutes of the restart. The ball was only partially cleared by the Celtic defence and it fell to Scott Glover at the edge of the box but he was unable to beat Boyle who pushed the ball away and his defence were able to clear the danger.

Calum Holland almost put Rossvale two up; he broke through three Celtic defenders and rounded the goalkeeper but his shot crept just wide of the target.

Boyle was on top form and he showed his class again, this time denying McBrearty’s drive from the edge of the box with an acrobatic save which he tipped over the bar.

Rossvale then managed to go two up – A cross was put into the box which was punched in the air by Boyle, Rob Fowler was able to fire a header home from close range and put his side two up with twenty minutes to go.

The final act came five minutes from time when Holland sent in a corner which was turned into the goal by a Celtic defender – this ensured that Rossvale would be victorious and become the champions of the West of Scotland.

The referee then brought the game to a close and Rossvale were crowned Champions. The match was thoroughly entertaining and there was little to separate the two teams for the majority of the game.

The superb save from Boyle to deny McBrearty’s thunderous drive - An excellent save which would not have looked out of place in the Premier League.
The first goal was superb – the ball from Fowler was outstanding and it merited a goal.
