1999's Under 15's PJDYFL Division 2
19 May 2014
Thunder & lightning couldn't spoil the title party as Maryhill juniors clinched the division 2 title.
A hat-trick from Patrick Baird & a goal a piece from John Cassidy & Adam McGowan sealed the victory for the away team
to give them their first league title.
Maryhill raced into he lead when a Patrick Baird shot from inside the box was adjudged to have been carried over the
line by the sprawling keeper, much to the despair of his defence who had turned away expecting the keeper to gather easily.
The second goal of the game & the second goal for Patrick Baird came soon after when he was sent clear from a defence
splitting pass before sliding in to prod the ball under the keeper & into the far corner.
A rout seemed to be on the cards when again Baird was again sent clear into the box & as he touched the ball by the
keeper he was upended only to be denied a stonewall penalty by the referee much to the astonishment of the away managment
team and supporters, this seemed to rally the home side who capitalised on a defensive error by John Cassidy, who's poor
pass back was pounced on by the home teams' forward to pull a goal back for the home team.
Just before halftime Maryhill extended their 2 goal cushion when a Reegan shearer corner waste at the back post by the
head of John Cassidy who powered the header into the goal to make amends for his earlier error.
Half time: Johnstone Burgh 1-3 Maryhill Juniors
The 2nd half started as the lightning storm in the distance grew ever closer but all the play was in the Johnston burgh
half as Maryhill attacked at every opportunity looking for a fourth goal that would make sure they where safe to be be
crowned champions, and a special goal it was. The storm was now above us & the heavens opened & as the rain poured down
a quickly taken free kick deep in Maryhill's half was knocked up field by Maryhill number 5 Cassidy & it was instantly
brought under control by Baird who turned & ran at the home teams defence, a drop of the shoulder seen him by 1 defender
another by 2 & as he cleared the third Baird unleashed a verocious unstoppable shot into the top right hand corner for
the Maryhill strikers hatrick.
As the rain eased & the light faded even more Maryhill scored again as a speculative long range effort by Adam McGowan was
again turned into his own net by the Johnston burgh keeper.
The home side did manage to grab a consulation with a fine strike of their own when the Johnston burgh midfielder was
given time to turn & shoot from outside the box & into the back of the net
As the final whistle blew, loud cheers went up as the Maryhill bench & the ever faithful supporters celebrated hopefully
the first of many titles to come. The emotions of the rain soaked champions was clear to see as the chorus of championies
went up behind the closed door of the away changing room.
