U16's West Region Cup
26 February 2014
Baillieston Juniors 98s met Celtic Boys Club 98s on a cold afternoon in East Kilbride with both teams looking for a place in the Quarter finals of the regional cup. Following a short delay due to a dramatic penalty shootout from an earlier match the game kicked off under blustery conditions.
Celtic started brightly and knocked the ball about with confidence in the middle of the park and caused Baillieston some problems early on with their pace and movement up front.
Baillieston were competing well in midfield, however, and were creating chances of their own before Celtic opened the scoring mid-way through the first half with a darting run and powerful shot from the edge of the box which nestled in the corner of the net.
Half Time: Celtic BC 1-0 Baillieston Juniors
Baillieston got a lucky break early in the second half when a low cross from the left was turned into his own net by a Celtic defender. This gave Baillieston a boost in confidence and they took the game to Celtic.
Baillieston took the lead shortly afterwards when a through ball sent their striker racing in on goal with only the keeper to beat. The keeper could only parry the firmly struck shot back into the strikers path who calmly side footed the ball into the net over the prone keeper.
The game flowed from end to end and both sides hit the woodwork late on. Celtic threw everything they could at Baillieston in the dying minutes and forced a succession of corners but Baillieston defended resolutely and managed to see the game out for a dramatic win.
