Crosshouse kicked the game off and straight away looked to play passing football and took control of the game early on.

The high tempo of Crosshouse’s play was evident from the start of the game and the first attack of the game resulted from a quickly taken throw in by William Lake.  Tass were not organised and an unmarked Reece Craig was able to get a cross into their box which Graeme Condon took control of well, turned and shot, the shot going just wide.

This was an early indication of how the first half would pan out.  Crosshouse stayed on the attack and Kyle Gilroy played Ben Black through with a brilliantly weighted pass.  Black’s finish did not match the pass and it went wide.

Crosshouse continued their dominance and did not give them time on the ball, the pressure high up the park allowed Kyle Gilroy to win the ball just inside the Tass area.  The attacker laid the ball off to Lewis Clark who had his side-footed shot well held by Tass’ Jordan McNaught.

Tass’ best opportunity came right at the end of the first half.  Leo McDermid ran down the left wing and looking to get a shot away from just outside the area.  Reece Craig caught up with the striker and tackled him but the referee gave a free kick around 20 yards out from goal.  The Tass players were looking for a red card for the defender but the ref only gave Craig a yellow card.  Dennon Fisher took the free kick and his shot was easily saved by James Hanlin, his first piece of work of the game.

Crosshouse dominated the first half but did not really test the Tass keeper.  They will look to keep their level of performance the same in the second half.  On the other hand, Tass will be pleased not to have conceded and will look to have more of a say in their final third.

Half Time: Crosshouse 0 – 0 Tass Thistle

Tass kicked off the second half just as it began to rain very heavily.  They looked to go straight on to the attack with a brilliant pass from deep finding Greg Morrison through on goal.  Morrison’s shot went just wide but served as a warning to Crosshouse that the second would not be dominated by them like the first was.

The next attack of the game resulted in the opening goal.  Another through ball put Greg Morrison through 1-on-1 with Crosshouse’s keeper James Hanlin.  Morrison kept his cool and finished well past the keeper to put his team ahead.

Crosshouse responded almost immediately and created a chance for themselves.  Good play in midfield by Erin Cuthbert allowed the midfielder to pass the ball to half time sub Robbie Garrick.  Garrick played Ben Black in just outside the box.  A brilliant recovering slide tackle stopped Black and allowed McNaught to collect the loose ball.

Greg Morrison then doubled Tass’ lead to give them a bit of breathing space.  He picked the ball up on the half way line and ran towards the Crosshouse goal taking on four defenders.  He found space inside the area and finished well past Hanlin for his second of the game.

Tass continued their pressure and tried to put the game beyond Crosshouse.  Greg Morrison had the chance to score his hat trick when he was played in on the right hand side of the box.  James Hanlin rushed out to meet the striker and saved well when Morrison tried to chip him.

Crosshouse offered little in the second half and were looking like a beaten side mid way through the second half.  Their misery was added to when Tass won a penalty after another brilliant run by Greg Morrison.  The striker rounded Hanlin looking for his hat trick and the goalkeeper brought the striker down, the referee had no choice but to award a penalty but was a little harsh when he sent the goalkeeper off.  With no substitute keeper an outfield player had to go in goals that player was Daniel Ross.  Dennon Fisher took the penalty and finished well in the corner leaving the keeper with no chance.

The Crosshouse coaches changed the formation to a more attacking one looking for a goal.  The decision was the right one as Crosshouse scored soon after the sub.  Robbie Garrick played a brilliant cross from the right wing into six yard box and Connor McMillan placed the header into the bottom corner, reducing Tass’ lead to two goals.

Tass then looked to restore their lead.  A long ball down the right wing ran to the Crosshouse keeper who came out of his area to clear.  The clearance fell straight to Marc Hood who controlled instantly and tried to score from 35 yards out with the keeper off his line.  Daniel Ross got back in time to save the shot and get Crosshouse on the attack again.

Tass went on another attack to try and ensure the victory.  Greg Morrison still looking for his third goal of the day found space in the penalty box and tried to curl a shot around a Crosshouse defender but his shot went narrowly wide.

With time running out Crosshouse threw everything at Tass trying to score and keep the game alive.  They did, Lewis Clark played Kyle Gilroy in with a through ball.  The striker took a touch, set himself and slotted the ball home to give Crosshouse a glimmer of hope in the match.  However, the shot was the last kick of the game and the referee blew the final whistle.

Tass won the Under 13’s League Cup.

It was a very even game with Crosshouse dominating the first half and Tass dominating the second.  However, Tass showed a deadly touch in front of goal by scoring the chances they created while they were on top.  Crosshouse will believe that if they were able to score during the first half then the game would have turned out a lot differently.
