Two special goals from Hannah Robertson gave Rangers victory over Old Firm rivals Celtic and put them in the final of the Scottish Cup. It took Robertson only three minutes to curl a 25-yard screamer into the top corner and after Celtic had equalised through an unfortunate own goal, Robertson took the game by the scruff of the neck and scored another goal of supreme quality in the final ten minutes to send the Rangers fans into raptures.
The teams had barely settled into their formations, Celtic in a traditional 4-4-2, Rangers following the lead of their senior side and going 4-3-3, when Robertson, the left sided point of the attacking trio, cut in and unleashed an unstoppable long range drive into the far top corner. It was completely unsaveable for Celtic goalkeeper Jade Baillie who could only watch it sail over her head.
After the dust had settled from the wonder goal, the match struggled to live up to the standard it had set. Neither side was able to get the ball down and play the way they would have liked, with few clear cut chances for either side in the first half.
Katie Frew fired over the bar from an Abby Callaghan cut back in Celtic’s best opportunity in the opening stages, but they managed to grab an equaliser through persistence and a slice of good fortune. Rhianne Ferguson forced her way down the right, supported by Yasmin Boyce, and this time the cross into the box ended up in the back of the net via an unfortunate Gers defender who was attempting to clear it.
Back on level terms, but Celtic couldn’t press the advantage in the first half and almost found themselves behind again when Amy Joan Muir’s cross was headed narrowly wide by the imperious Robertson. Muir, who seemed to glide past her marker, found a perfect cross at the near post and Robertson beat Baillie to the ball but just couldn’t direct it on target.
