The weekend’s P&JYFL Cup finals were off to a flyer as Barrhead YFC 2003s lifted the trophy in style at Parklea. It was a deserved victory in the end, but Division Two Champions Rossvale made this a game right up until the closing stages, with two sensational second half strikes.

It was a match won in the midfield, where Barrhead took a firm grip after falling behind to an early stunner from Leeroy Shannon. It seemed to focus minds and before long Barrhead were playing a lot of the game in the Rossvale half, pushing their opponents deeper and forcing mistakes.

The opener came from a great strike from Shannon on the edge of the box on 16 minutes. Rossvale started brightly and hoped to sit in and protect their lead.

Through Lewis Hobbs and Aiden Green though Barrhead began to dictate the tempo, Green and Joshua Groden having shots saved by Gabriel Ommer after good build ups through the middle. It seemed only a question of time before Barrhead would find a way through, and sure enough in a quick-fire two-minute spell they had turned the match on its head before half time.

The danger came through the middle again, with Rossvale stretched to pick up runners as Ethan Furze found space to shoot from close range. This time Ommer could only parry out to a grateful Vincent Scott who dispatched for the leveller.

And there was to no let up before half time, with Rossvale perhaps hanging on for the referee’s respite. Right on the whistle though Barrhead won a spot kick after Furze was tripped in the box, and up stepped Hobbs to fire his side in front at the break.

It was probably a welcome break for the Rossvale team under the cosh, and they would have hoped to regroup and put the first half behind them. Instead, Barrhead established a two goal lead almost from the kick off.

It came from a flowing move down the right as Green played in Lewis Barclay down the channel. His cross sat up perfectly for Hobbs to tap home.

The clear momentum seemed set with a likelihood of more goals for the Barrhead side. Rossvale knew they had to change something, and with nothing to lose pushed players up with Kyle Watret making way for Liam Heaney.

And they pulled one back in spectacular fashion on 50 minutes. This time Shannon found space on the edge of the box, and fired an explosive long range effort into Ben Matthew McNaughton’s top corner. Just the jolt they needed, with nothing to lose and the game began to open up.

Rossvale looked to have a more attacking shape now as they went for broke, but they were caught on the hop 5 minutes later, as Barrhead restored their two goal cushion.

It came after a sustained passage of play with Barrhead pressing their opponents deeper and deeper, struggling to clear their lines. The ball fell to Green on the edge of the box and the midfielder was able to dart through the middle and tuck low past Ommer.

Rossvale were going down fighting though and had a goal back two minutes later, after a marauding run down the left by Daniel Brannan. His cross fell to Blair Hay inside the box to finish past McNaughton.

With a quarter of an hour to play this pulsating match still had some life in it, and Rossvale kept up a spirited fight.

Barrhead had two further chances to finish the game off, with Barclay grazing the bar and Sam Lochhead almost coming close from a spectacular overhead, as Rossvale kept up a spirited defence.

In the end though they succumbed to a dominant Barrhead display as Green capped a man of the match performance with a fine low strike from the edge of the box to win the silverware for his side with five minutes on the clock.

In the end the lower division champions acquitted themselves well against their Barrhead opponents. It caps a perfect season for the division one winners, who look to have the makings of an impressive unit in the seasons ahead.
