Fixture: Hampden BC v Broomhill BC
Competition: Under 14's David Mushet Cup
The David Mushet League Cup tie between Hampden Boys Club and Broomhill BC was decided by a last minute penalty at Barlia pitches in Castlemilk on Saturday.
The match, which was badly effected by a strong left to right wind throughout, took time to settle down into a rhythm but it was 3rd division Broomhill who seized the early initiative with their 2 pacey strikers causing the Hampden defence numerous problems.
However, Hampden grew into the match and looked dangerous as Jay Donnelly, James MacDonald and top scorer Danny Metford all came close with shots from distance but were unable to find a way past the Broomhill keeper.
It was of no surprise on 20 minutes when Hampden took the lead. The ball broke to influential captain Ryan Mooney in midfield and he carried the ball forward before releasing a pass to James MacDonald who made no mistake as he fired low into the net.
Broomhill responded positively and only an outstanding save from Hampden keeper Blair Stewart prevented an equalizing goal.
The equalizer did come though on the stroke of half time and it was no more than Broomhill deserved. There was however a stroke of luck about the goal as an in swinging corner from the left caught the wind and dropped into the net.
Half Time : Hampden BC 1-1 Broomhill BC
The second half was a bit of a scrappy affair as the high winds affected both teams.
Hampden continued to press for a 2nd goal to prevent the tie having to be settled by the dreaded penalty kicks but attempts by Mooney, Metford and MacDonald were all saved by the impressive Broomhill keeper.
Broomhill seemed happy as the half went on to play on the counter attack but goalkeeper Stewart was untroubled as their attackers were unable to breech the Hampden central defence of Sean Smith and Ryan Whiteside.
The winning goal did eventually come but Hampden had to wait until the final minute of the match. Striker Danny Metford, who was unlucky not to score during the match, cut in from the left and was fouled inside the box as he made his way towards goal. The referee had no hesitation as he pointed to the spot. It was left to Hampden captain Ryan Mooney to fire his team into the next round.
The match was very competitive and Broomhill can consider themselves unlucky not to at least take the tie to penalties against a team 2 divisions higher than them. Hampden will now face either St Cadocs or Stamperland in the next round.
