Syngenta Juveniles ran out 2-1 winners in the Trans World Soccer Scottish Youth FA Cup 14s final thanks to a brace from Alex Thomson.
On a rain-soaked surface at Airdrie’s Excelsior Stadium, Syngenta started the brightest and were creating chances early on. In the ninth minute Aaron McMillan had a great opportunity when he connected with Kyle Mcguire’s corner. It was a tame header though and didn’t trouble the Ayr goalie.
Five minutes later Ayr had a fantastic chance to break the deadlock when Arran Sawyer received a low cross into the area. From around six yards out he was odds on to score but somehow managed to scuff the shot straight into the grateful arms of Syngenta keeper Dean Love.
A matter of seconds later Syngenta had made them pay for the missed opportunity. A relatively routine cross into the box which the keeper should have claimed was met by Alex Thomson who headed in with ease.
Thomson was instrumental throughout the first half and could have had another before the break if not for good goalkeeping by Grady McTaggart.
Ayr then got on the scoresheet in fortuitous circumstances just before the end of the half thanks to a set piece. A corner whipped in ricocheted off the Syngenta crossbar and reached Arran Sawyer at the backpost who calmly headed in.

In a tense second half both teams upped the ante in search of a winning goal which made for some entertaining attacking football for the spectators to enjoy.
However it was only after 20 minutes of second half football when the first clear-cut chance came about, and Syngenta made the most of it. Thomson bagged his second of the game thanks to a good corner whipped into the area. The ball wasn’t cleared immediately and it fell to Thomson who thumped it home past a whole host of players.
Ten minutes later Syngenta could have been home and dry. Thomson, again was involved as he got on the end of a free kick but could only direct a header over the bar.
Then, just before the final whistle, Ayr had a great chance to take the game to extra time. A free kick on the edge of the opposition penalty area was to be taken by Ayr’s Gavin Todd. It was a great effort by Todd but it was met by an equally as good save by Love.
Ayr gave it their all but just couldn’t create enough clear cut chances and so Syngenta ran out deserved winners. Syngenta went up to lift the trophy, much to the joy of their large following. Coming just a week after lifting the County Cup, this is fast turning into a dream season for the Grangemouth outfit.

Star Player
Ayr Boswell
Syngenta Juveniles
Aaran Sawyer was always dangerous going forward and caused the Syngenta defence problems throughout.
Alex Thomson's double was the difference between the sides. He really stepped up to the plate on the big stage.
Magic Moment
Ayr Boswell
Syngenta Juveniles
Arran Sawyer’s header in the first half was expertly taken. He got enough power and direction on the ball to take it past the goalkeeper who wasn’t badly placed.
The winning goal from Thomson has to go down as Syngenta’s magic moment. It was a composed finish in front of goal when it would have been easy to blaze the ball over the bar in the head of the moment.
