Ayr Boswell saw off Bellfield in a hotly contested cup final at a drizzly Blair Park, Hurlford. The Ayr based side stormed out of the starting blocks and nearly opened the scoring in the first 15 seconds when Andy Taylor jinked clean through but Bellfield stopper Alan Tipping was out sharply to block.

The whirlwind start to a frenetic first 40 minutes continued when Boswell took the lead in the second minute. Taylor was played clean through yet again and this time made no mistake one on one with Tipping as he swept the ball beyond the advancing keeper into the bottom corner.

Bellfield recovered and nearly equalised in the sixth minute when a cross from the right found its way to Scott Cowie but his snapshot from six yards at the near post was blocked by Boswell defender Sean McCrone.

After two brief stoppages when both goalkeepers went down in the edge of their own boxes Bellfield grew in confidence and Cameron Elliot pounced on some hesitation in the Boswell box on 16 minutes but couldn’t generate enough power on his header to beat the keeper from close range.

Bellfield were undone in the 18th minute by a well executed move straight from the training ground. Boswell worked the ball out to the right back, Callum McCrone, who floated a 40 yard diagonal ball to Kerr Houston who lurked at the back post to lead high and direct an eight yard header back across goal and into the far corner of the net to double their lead.

Bellfield pressed desperately for a goal to get themselves back into the match. Blair McLaughland fired a 20 yard half volley over on the 23rd minute and two minutes later an audacious 25 yard strike from the right side from Adam Wales cannoned the Boswell crossbar. Bellfield eventually broke through in the 27th minute when a free kick from the halfway line was launched into the box and the bouncing ball was poked into the net by Wales to half the deficit.

Two minutes later the lively Wales tested the goalkeeper from distance with a vicious low shot. Just as the game seemed to be swinging in the favour of the Kilmarnock based side Boswell restored their two goal cushion in the 31st minute. Houston showed good trickery on the edge of the box to play in Aiden Porter who lashed home from 18 yards.

Shaun Sockell waltzed past four Bellfield players down the left side in the 36th minute but his shot was diverted wide of the post by Tipping. Seconds later Ryan Kirkwood’s 20 yard shot soared over as Boswell looked to turn the screw.

However the game took another twist three minutes before the break. Cowie was released free down the right hand side and unleashed a powerful rising shot that was saved into the path of Wales who tapped home the rebound into the net to score his and Bellfield’s second of the game. That concluded a pulsating first half.

Half Time: Bellfield BC 2-3 Ayr Boswell

The second half completely contrasted with the first. Bellfield started the brighter but both teams were nervous and the game turned scrappy as a result and few chances presented itself. But the trailing Bellfield created more of the limited opportunities.

After thumping a free kick over the bar in the 51st minute Bellfield pounced on a slack goal kick and a cross from the right by Cowie nearly found Wales at the back post but the ball eluded him. Wales looped a shot from eight yards out six minutes later when looking for his hat trick. Boswell were defending stoutly and were starting to frustrate Bellfield in the final third.

Cameron Elliot fired a dead centre 20 yard free kick into the wall for Bellfield in the 61st minute. It was another tale of frustration for the Kilmarnock outfit.

Bellfield waited for that golden chance to arrive to level the game and it did two minutes later. A through ball slipped in the marauding centre half, Josh Rodgers, but he rolled his effort passed the goalkeeper and off the base of the upright from 10 yards.

It looked increasingly likely it wasn’t going to be Bellfield’s day and the last chance of the match fell to them in the 74th minute when Elliot blazed another free kick over from a good position. Boswell managed to see out the closing stages comfortably to win the Brian Davies Cup.

Adam Wales was the biggest attacking treat on the pitch and nearly bagged himself a hat-trick.

Callum McCrone was excellent at right back. A threat going forward, good delivery and solid at the back.
