On a freezing Saturday morning Stewarton hosted Irvine in the first round of the Supplementary Cup.  The tie went the way of the hosts as they continued their good league form by winning the match comfortably.

The game got off to a lightning start with Stewarton taking the lead with the match’s first attack.  The hosts had a corner on their right hand side which was played into the area.  There was a scramble inside the area and eventually the ball was forced over the line to open the scoring.

Stewarton’s lead was doubled shortly after good work down the right wing which enabled the winger to loop a cross into the area.  The ball was won in the by the attacker who drove his effort into the back of the net with a powerful header from six yards out.

More good play by Stewarton nearly saw them add another goal inside twenty minutes.  Some intricate passing on the edge of box was followed by a lay off to a midfielder who smashed his shot from twenty yards out with the effort finishing just wide of the left hand post.

The home side continued to play on the front foot and got the third goal that their performance had deserved.  Their left winger had come inside and was given the ball on the edge of the box.  He played a lovely first time ball with the outside of his foot to play in his striker who took a touch to get the ball out of his feet and then lashed the ball home from twelve yards out.

Stewarton were not finished there as they were able to score another before half time.  A long ball from the right back area set their striker away who did very well to break the offside trap.  He drove towards goal and put the ball around the on-rushing keeper to make the score 4-0.

Just before half time, though, Irvine were able to get themselves on the scoresheet and provide themselves with some hope heading into the second half.  The guests broke quickly down their right wing with the ball being crossed into the Stewarton area.  The attacker was alive and pounced on the ball, which allowed him to finish well into the bottom corner.

At half time Stewarton were well worth their lead.  They were the better side, creating many chances and playing some nice football.

Half Time:  Stewarton Annick 4 – 1 Irvine Meadow

In the second half Irvine had the wind with them which helped them as it caused a few problems in the Stewarton defence.  The first chance of the second period fell to the visitors after nice play down the left wing.  The winger was able to flash a cross towards the centre of the box, around six yards from the goal line.  The Irvine striker showed a lot of strength as he muscled the defender out of the way to knick in and prod the ball goalwards.  The effort produced a great point-blank save from the keeper who did not know much about it.

Stewarton responded well and got their fifth of the morning after a powerful run down their right wing by their winger.  He found himself inside the area and smashed a shot towards goal, his effort cracked off the bar and was followed in by the left winger who had the easy task of finishing the rebound albeit from a tight angle.

Throughout the second half Irvine had the majority of possession but were unable to break down a strong Stewarton defence and create many chances.  This then enabled Stewarton to hit their guests on the break and they did so again as the game came to an end.  The hosts broke down their right hand side and got a low cross into the area.  The Irvine defender missed the clearance which allowed Stewarton’s attacker to come in and finish well with the last attack of the game.

At full time, Stewarton deserved their win after the performance they put in during the first half.  They were second best in the second half and if Irvine were able to create more chances while they were on top the game could have come to a different conclusion.
