Bonnyton Thistle vs Goldenhill BC - Under 19sBonnyton kicked off the final of the SYFA Challenge Cup looking to retain the trophy they had won in 2011.  They played against a good Goldenhill side who went into the final as underdogs and worked hard for the duration of the match.

The Kilmarnock side started brightly and forced the first real opportunity through Edward McTernan.  A free kick was taken quickly and played down the left hand channel into the area.  McTernan got onto the ball, turned outside onto his right foot and tried his luck with a floated effort which finished just wide of the post.

Goldenhill’s first chance of the game came from a free kick taken by Sean Burns.  The midfielder won the free kick himself 20 yards from goal on the right hand side of the area.  Burns took a shot which finished wide and did not worry Bonnyton’s keeper.

Edward McTernan had a good chance quickly after in a frantic start.  He was played through by a long ball which he or his team mate could have taken on.  McTernan took control of the situation and drove towards goal.  He hit a looping volley which went just over the Goldenhill net.

Goldenhill forced a chance of their own coming from a corner.  Sean Burns took the corner from the right hand side and played his cross deep to the back post.  An attacker came round the back and won a header at the back post which needed a smart save from Chris Murchie to keep the scores level.

It was an end to end game and Bonnyton created the next chance after terrific work from Calum Watt.  The creative midfielder went on a run down the left wing, keeping the ball well under pressure from several defenders.  Eventually, he got to the by-line where he drilled a low cross across the face of goal.  Goldenhill’s Marc Wilson parried the ball onto Edward McTernan who saw the ball ricochet off him and just wide of goal.

Edward McTernan was constant threat throughout the first half and popped up everywhere.  He forced a good save by Goldenhill’s keeper when his cross from the right wing was goal bound and needed Wilson to touch the ball over for a corner.  Still on the right, McTernan nearly created the opening goal.  A brilliant ball was played to him freeing him from his marker.  He drove towards the goal line where he squared the ball to Greig Mitchell who was arriving for a tap in but the ball was too far ahead of Mitchell to get contact on it.

Goldenhill had a half chance well saved by Bonnyton’s goalie after a clearance fell to Lee Cockburn.  He controlled the ball well and struck a fierce shot which was well held by Bonnyton’s Chris Murchie.

Five minutes before half time Bonnyton were able to open the scoring.  Attacker Greig Mitchell was played in well from deep.  The striker kept his cool and placed his shot passed the keeper to put Bonnyton up 1-0.

Goldenhill responded well to going a goal down.  They forced a free kick on the right wing.  Sean Burns took the kick which was not cleared well.  Connor McGlinchey got onto the ball and struck a driven volley which was deflected wide for a corner.  The corner was taken by Burns whose cross was sent in deep to the back post.  The ball was headed back into the danger area and headed onto his own bar by a Bonnyton player – the ball rebounded to a Goldenhill attacker who put his effort over.

At half time, Bonnyton led 1-0.  They deserved a goal with their play in front of goal and their attacker Edward McTernan was constantly threatening the Goldenhill defence.  Goldenhill will feel hard done by with the score as it stands.  They have played well and created a few chances of their own which could have been taken.

Half Time: Bonnyton Thistle Under 19s 1 - 0 Goldenhill BC Under 19s

Bonnyton Thistle vs Goldenhill BC - Under 19sGoldenhill kicked off the second half looking to reverse the score line that stood going into half time.

It was Bonnyton however who forced the opening chance of the half.  Stuart Davidson won the ball on the edge of Goldenhill’s area and played in Greig Mitchell.  The striker took the shot early but blazed his effort over with help from a deflection.

Bonnyton continued in their search for a second goal and Calum Watt nearly provided it.  He played a nice one-two with Craig Paterson which released him down the left wing.  He drove into the box and poked a shot goalwards which was straight at Goldenhill’s keeper and saved rather than squaring to his better placed team mates.

Goldenhill equalised five minutes into the second half after good work from Ryan McKeever.  The attacker broke clear of the Bonnyton defence and tried to go around Bonnyton’s onrushing keeper.  Chris Murchie got a hand to the ball which stopped McKeever from progressing and allowing team mates to get behind the ball.  McKeever, though, took the ball and chipped the defenders from 16 yards out to bring Goldenhill right back into the game.

With the next attack of the game Bonnyton retook the lead.  A cross from the left wing was not dealt with properly in the Goldenhill defence.  The ball fell to Michael Lennox who controlled the ball well and unleashed a powerful drive which went in from 20 yards.

Goldenhill equalised again with their next attack.  A cross came into the Bonnyton box from deep on the left wing and it was not cleared properly.  The ball was flicked into the path of Ryan McKeever by a Bonnyton defender which allowed the Goldenhill player finish well from close range to make the scores 2-2.

Goldenhill could have taken the lead moments later.  They won a free kick on the left wing which was taken by Sean Burns.  His cross was to the back post but no one could make contact with the ball despite three attackers close to the ball.

Bonnyton were able to take the lead again after some good play between Greig Mitchell and Calum Watt.  The two played a couple of one-two’s between each other which gave Mitchell space on the edge of the box.  He tried to return the ball to Watt but his pass was cut out.  Mitchell got onto the loose ball and finished the move well to nudge Bonnyton back into the lead with fifteen minutes remaining.

The rain began to lash down onto the park around 80 minutes into the game meaning the artificial surface became slippy and the ball increasingly harder to control.

Bonnyton were able to create the next chance of the game.  A throw in, won with help from the slippy surface, was taken on the left wing near the corner flag.  Greig Mitchell received the ball inside the area with his back to goal.  He turned well and tried to find the top corner from a tight angle and his shot was saved easily by Goldenhill’s keeper.

Goldenhill were still looking for an equaliser to force extra time.  They nearly found one when a free kick was drilled into the Bonnyton box from the half way line.  The ball was flicked on at the penalty spot but ended up just wide of the post.

Bonnyton Thistle vs Goldenhill BC - Under 19sThe game became very fierce and scrappy in the final 10 minutes as Bonnyton tried to run the clock down and Goldenhill became frustrated.  This was how the game finished with neither side being able to create any decent chances.

At full time, Bonnyton played well and just about deserved their win.  They were not as good as they have been previously in the season but ground out the win.  Goldenhill will feel very disappointed with the final result.  They played very well and created more than enough chances to force extra time and even win the game in normal time.
My Man of the Match awards today go to Greig Mitchell and Ryan McKeever.  Bonnyton’s Mitchell gets the award for playing well throughout the game and getting on the score sheet with two goals.  Similarly with McKeever for Goldenhill who kept his side in the game with two good goals.
