This season’s League Cup final saw two teams challenging for the title battle it out for the trophy.  Irvine Thistle and Ardrossan are second and third in the league respectively with games in hand on the table toppers.

Ardrossan kicked the game off and from the start, the pitch was taking its toll on the two teams.  It was holding the ball up and making it hard for either side to get the ball down and play football.

The first chance of the game came from a corner.  Ardrossan’s Ross McMillan took the corner and hit the penalty spot with it.  Marcus McCrindle sent a powerful header towards goal but it was cleared off the line by an Irvine defender.

For the next few minutes the game was played in the centre of the park.  Neither side was able to gain control of the game.  The pitch was still causing problems for the players who were not able to get the ball down and pass.  The few half chances that were being made were coming from set pieces which were launched into the box.

Ardrossan were able to force some good chances from corners.  Firstly, Greg Forbes corner found Alister Lizanec who saw his effort cleared off the line.  Then, Lizanec got onto another corner and was able to lay off team mate Scott McKee who blasted his shot over from 10 yards out.

With the next attack of the game Ardrossan were able to take the lead.  A cross came into the Irvine box from the right wing but they were unable to deal with it.  The ball broke to an onrushing attacker who was able to blast the ball into the back of the net.  The half time whistle went shortly after the goal.

Ardrossan went into the break leading 1-0.  They looked dangerous in the first half, they played more direct than Irvine meaning they did not have to put up with the poor pitch.  Irvine came to terms with the park near the end of the half and were able to play their passing game.  However, they were unable to create many chances throughout the first period.

Half Time:  Irvine Thistle 0 – 1 Ardrossan Winton Rovers

Irvine kicked off the second half and began brightly by winning an early corner.  Ross Goggans’ cross found Corrie Bonner who put his header over from 8 yards out.

After the break Irvine had added a more incisive game and were able to create more chances than they did in the first half.

Rico White, who had just come back on after being injured early on, equalised for his side with his first meaningful touch since being re-introduced.  Connor McClure crossed the ball from the left hand side, it trickled across the 6 yard line and White was on hand to tap in.

A quick second goal was added by Irvine through White again.  He picked the ball up on the right wing and was able to get passed several defenders before cutting onto his left foot and finishing brilliantly into the corner.

As the game came to a close Irvine added a third goal.  It was Rico White who completed his hat trick to round off a fantastic performance from the striker.  He was able to get onto his left foot and finish well to put the game to bed.  The final whistle went shortly after the goal.

Irvine’s second half display was brilliant and they deserved the win.  They kept the ball well and were able to create chances, something which was missing in the first half.  On the other hand, Ardrossan did not play well in the second half.  They did very well in the first but were unable to keep that level of performance up.

Irvine’s Man of the Match award goes to Rico White.  He started but was taken off early through injury.  When he came back on in the second half he changed the game and fully deserved his hat trick.

For Ardrossan, Connor Stewart wins the award.  I felt he worked very hard up front and constantly made dangerous runs which caused the Irvine defenders problems.

Congratulations to Irvine Thistle for winning the CAYFA League Cup.

Good luck to both teams for the remainder of the season.
