Gourock YAC Under 17s vs St Cadocs YC Under 17s
PDJYFL U17s Division 1 - 25/02/2012
PDJYFL U17s Division 1 - 25/02/2012
After the disappointment of last week this was a chance for the lads to get back on track and they started as though they meant business. Despite playing into a stiff breeze it was one way traffic and they took the lead in only six minutes. From a throw in David pinged in a searching cross and Joe took it well from ten yards, burying it past the goalie. 1-0
Saints continued to press the play and only two minutes later Gordon raced onto a poor pass-back and doubled the lead. 2-0
It looked like the only question would be “how many” as Jamie, Brian and Gordon all saw great efforts go narrowly by the woodwork as a rampant St Cadocs gave the hosts a lesson in attacking football. The lesson was learned though, and in the sixteenth minute, in their first venture into St Cadocs’ penalty box, Gourock scored. A cross from the left was met bravely by their striker who buried a great header past Owen. 2-1
A swift riposte was required and it nearly came two minutes later when Youseff and Joe combined but Joe’s left foot shot hit the post. Five minutes later Gourock were awarded a free kick just outside the box and Owen met the resultant shot with a fine stop. Unfortunately it aggravated a hand injury and he required several minutes of treatment. Gourock were allowed more possession and they took advantage with forty five minutes on the clock when another move down the left resulted in a fine cutback and another accurate strike to level the game. 2-2
This stunned St Cadocs, but they rallied and went further ahead right on the stroke of half time. As the ref played the injury time allowed for Owen’s injury. Joe ran onto David’s pass and as he went by the keeper he was brought down. Penalty! David hammered his shot past the keeper and Saints regained their lead which was deserved on the balance of play.
Half Time: Gourock YAC Under 17s 2-3 St Cadocs YC Under 17s
The second half started as the first half had, with St Cadocs threatening to run amok, and in the fiftieth minute Jamie buried a 22 yard free kick to once again give Saints a two goal cushion. 4-2
Surely they couldn’t throw away a two goal lead again? Could they? Gourock, despite the wind, never resorted to the long ball, but passed their way back into the match. St Cadocs, despite their lead, were chasing the game, and that lead was once again reduced to only one when a speculative shot beat Owen in sixty five minutes. 4-3
Football can be cruel, we all know that, but it can also be very cruel indeed and only four minutes later Owen was beaten again from the same distance. Owen has been in great form not only this season but was exceptional last season, but he was clearly hampered by his injury when he went for the shot which ended up nestling in the back of the net. 4-4
There would be no clear cut chances for either side as both defences did their job (at last!) and the game ended with what was, on reflection, a fair result for either side. St Cadocs will be disappointed at dropping two precious points but it could have been worse, especially with an injured goalie, and no team will get it easy here.
Full time: Gourock YAC Under 17s 4-4 St Cadocs YC Under 17s (Saints goalscorers: Joe, Gordon, David & Jamie)
Man of the Match
Brian O’Donnell played just in front of the back four and broke up a lot of attacks, especially in the last 20 minutes. Another solid display from a consistent performer.
