Saltcoats, lying in 11th place in the league, kicked the game off against Dean, who were 3rd, on a sunny Saturday morning.
Dean got on the front foot early on in the game.  Richard Kelly creating the chance for Kristopher Kerr who shot just over.  Kerr’s miss was shortly forgotten as he put Dean with a brilliant side foot volley from a Ben Richmond cross.
Saltcoats’ first chance of the game should have brought them level.  A mix up in the Dean defence following a Saltcoats free kick allowed Lee Walker to flick the ball to William Cairns inside the Dean box.  The striker’s shot went over the bar.
After Saltcoats’ attack Dean took control of the game.  A cross from Daniel Brown into the Saltcoats’ box with 2 strikers looking to score.  The strikers got in each other’s way, allowing the keeper to collect the ball ending any danger on his goal.
As Dean continued to press they created many chances.  The best falling to James McGill who was put through by Kristopher Kerr.  McGill’s shot was well saved by Mark Hardgraft in the Saltcoats’ goal.
The second goal of the game went to Dean, a goal which they deserved for the amount of chances they had created so far in the half.  Calum Black played a chipped ball to Kristopher Kerr put the striker through 1-on-1 with the Saltcoats’ keeper, a ball which was used and worker numerous times throughout the half.  Kerr got to the goal line and cut the ball back to Black who had followed his pass and shot first time from the left hand edge of the box and into the top corner of the goal.
Saltcoats had a rare attack midway through the half, another attack where they should have scored.  A cross from the right hand side came in from Ryan Grier.  A poor punch by Dawid Uczeko allowed the ball to fall to Thomas Northcote inside the six yard box, his shot went over the bar.
Dean scored a third and then a fourth goal just before half time.  A poor goal kick from Mark Hardgraft was won by Calum Black and he was able to direct the ball towards James McGill.  McGill then coolly finished with a lob over the onrushing keeper.  McGill quickly added his second of the game.  Another through ball from Daniel Brown got Kristopher Kerr to the goal line.  Kerr’s cross was for McGill who knocked the ball in with his standing leg.
At half time Dean were well worth their lead.  It probably should have been more, they created loads of chances and Saltcoats only have their keeper, Mark Hardgraft, to thank for keeping the score down.
Half Time: Dean Boys Club 4 – 0 Saltcoats United
Dean kicked off the second half and looked to add to their lead.  However, with the first attack of the half Saltcoats scored.  A long ball from a free kick by Adam Wilson put Murray McBlain through inside the Dean penalty area.  McBlain hit the bar but the rebound was tapped in by substitute Ben Ransom.
Dean looked to reply instantly, Richard Kelly’s flick found Kristopher Kelly who had his shot well saved and went for a corner.  From the corner, Calum Black had his powerful header cleared off the line by the Saltcoats defence.
From the next attack Dean regained their four goal lead.  Calum Black’s cross fell to Kristopher Kerr around 12 yards out.  Kerr finished well passed the keeper to make it 5-1 to Dean.
After the goal, Dean picked their game up and took hold of the match.  Good work on the right wing by Daniel Black allowed him to get a cross in to Richard Kelly who had his shot blocked, the rebound was saved and went for a corner.  From the corner, Calum Black had his second header of the game cleared off the line.
Dean’s next attack resulted in another goal.  A cross from Ben Richmond was met by Daniel Brown’s head.  The header was well saved by Hardgraft but the rebound was smashed in by Richard Kelly.
The final attack of the game went to Saltcoats and they scored from it.  Good work by Murray McBlain let him play Derek Gormly through.  The striker finished well past the onrushing keeper.
The final score line does not flatter Dean, their first half performance was brilliant but they got complacent throughout the second and allowed Saltcoats a way back into the game.  Saltcoats played a lot better in the second half, compared to the first, and will look to take that level of performance into their next game.
