Maddiston Minis from the CSFA League came away from Aberdeenshire with a place in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup after a 6-1 win over Portlethen SC United. C League ADJFA outfit Portlethen put in a good display and can be proud of their efforts. Maddiston had some brilliant individual performances with goals being shared around the team.

Both sides had chances early in the game, Kieran Dingwall had a good effort for Portlethen denied before Ryan McLung had the ball in the net for the visitors, however the goal was disallowed.

In the search for an opening goal, Portlethen had a bright spell as the game progressed with Ross McLaughlin having an effort on goal saved by Blair Gallagher after the United right back had an ambitious 30 yard effort.

Maddiston took the lead on 18 minutes, Ryan McLung was causing Portlethen all sorts of problems and he beat the offside trap after a good ball and the forward completed a composed finish past Ryan Tocher.

It was 2-0 10 minutes before half time with McLung very much involved again after a great assist by Kristopher Orr found McLung who guided home a fine header into the back of the net. Portlethen then had an appeal for a penalty before the half time whistle when Marshall was bundled over in the area, however the referee withdrew any protests from the strong home crowd.

Maddiston played at a very good tempo at the start of the second half and some of the football played was too much for a spirited and enthusiastic Portlethen side, a good ball found Aaron Smith who finished off well.

It was 4-0 on 49 minutes. Maddiston continued to play some fantastic football and the ball came to Tommy Goodwin, who produced a good finish to put the tie to bed for the CSFA side.

The goal of the game arrived on 53 minutes. Maddiston were too strong in midfield for the hosts and Callum Hastings got the ball before guiding a fine finish into the top left hand corner past Tocher.

The damage was complete 10 minutes later for the visitors after a free kick by Orr deceived Tocher and the ball went into the net. It was tough on the Portlethen who despite conceding six goals had a good game.

Portlethen got a deserved goal on 64 minutes. Keenan Marshall broke clear of the Maddiston defence with Blair Gallagher only to beat for the tall striker and Marshall delivered a fine finish into the bottom left hand corner which was a consolation goal however, got a large cheer from the home crowd as a respect of how their side played despite the heavy scoreline.

Credit to both sets of players who put on a terrific game of football in front of a big crowd, Maddiston march on and pick up a confidence boosting result after an indifferent start to the season whilst this was Portlethen's first Scottish Cup game at the national stage and they can be proud of their achievements beating B League ADJFA opposition in Donside Juvenile and Ellon Meadows prior to this game.
