Rangers fought off a Partick Thistle comeback to go through to the next round of the Scottish FA Youth Cup

Goals from Zak Rudden and Andy Dallas early in the second half looked to see Rangers through but then a quick brace from Neil McLaughlin took the game to extra time.

Then Rudden got his second either side of Serge Atakayi and Dapo Mebude to see Rangers into the next round where they will face St Johnstone.

Thistle finished the game with 10 men as Andrew McCarthy was sent off with minutes left of extra time for a second yellow after a foul on Atakayi.

The first chance of the game went to Rangers as a well whipped ball in from Jamie Barjonas met the head of Cameron Palmer whose header was straight down the throat of Goalkeeper Jamie Stevenson.

Thistle then had the best chance of the first half after McLaughlin went on a mazy run but his shot was tame. It was a great opportunity for the Jags and one that McLaughlin would've certainly felt that he could do better.

Then Atakayi had a fantastic opportunity and it came in bizarre circumstances as Barjonas put in a fantastic challenge which was picked up by Atakayi but his shot was straight at the goalkeeper.

Chances in the first half were few and far between as both sides were locked in a scrappy midfield battle. However it did set up n entertaining second half.

Only three minutes into the second half Rangers took the lead. A defensive clearance from Harry Granger fell straight to Cameron Palmer who then helped the ball into Rudden who finished well into the far corner.

Not long after that Rangers had a two goal cushion after a well worked corner fell to Barjonas on the edge of the 18 yard box who slipped in Dallas to finish into the far right corner.

Rangers had a great chance to make it three shortly afterwards when Dallas had a great chance to wrap the game up and get his second. But when he tried to take it round the keeper it clutched at his feet.

The game was then blown wide open as Thistle were awarded a penalty after Callum Wilson was bundled down in the box. McLaughlin stepped up and sent Kieran Wright the wrong way.

Only four minutes later it was level and the goal came after Harry Granger knocked the ball down to McLaughlin who bundled the ball home.

Rangers then had a wonderful chance to win the game as Rudden flashed a shot wide after being one on one with the keeper.

Rangers started extra time the better of the two teams, and they had the first chance of extra time as Palmer hit a shot from just outside the box, which was saved by the 'keeper only as far as Dallas who was unable to score the rebound.

On the stroke of half time Rangers took a well deserved lead and it was through Atakayi, who was a constant threat, after a bit of pinball in the penalty area, the ball fell to Atakayi who slotted it under the keeper.

Rangers were searching for the next goal to wrap the game up, and that is exactly what they did. Mebude ran past two Thistle players and slipped in Rudden who slipped it under the on-rushing keeper.

Thistle were then brought down to 10 men as McCarthy took out Atakayi on the halfway line.

Rangers finished the scoring as Mebude got onto Stephen Keely's deflected shot to send Rangers into the next round.

Zak Rudden: The goal that really kicked the game into life after a lack luster first half and also his all round game was exceptional. his hold up play and also his link up with Atakayi was really good. Maybe a call up to the first team soon as Rangers are lacking goals at the moment, maybe he is the guy to help.
Neil McLaughlin: He was The Jags only real bright spark in the match and also he took his second goal really well as he hit it on the turn also if it wasn't for him thistle really lacked creativity and any real chances

Ruddens Brace: The goals came at very good times for Rangers his second goal was the goal that won the game and wrapped it up for Rangers. And his first one really kicked that game into life
McLaughlins second goal, as he did so well to help the ball into the net even though he was hitting it on the spin and it was difficult to get contact.
