Fixture: Largs Colts v Ayr Boswell U14
Competition: Central Ayrshire YFA
Venue: Barrfields, Largs
Date: Saturday 16th January 2016
Largs Colts kicked off the competitive games in 2016 by welcoming Ayr Boswell Colts to Barrfields on a cold Saturday morning. With the frost claiming all other games in the league this was a chance for Colts to move into a clear second in the league. Colts lined up in their familiar shape with McTaggart and Bainbridge returning to the starting line-up after missing the friendly against Giffnock.
Largs kicked off and looked to put their opponents under pressure with some quick passing football, but Boswell however were well organised and with pace and strength at the back they were coping well with Largs strikers Smith and Brown. On five minutes Boswell won a corner which was sent in deep and keeper Irwin did well to take the header cleanly.
A few minutes later and it was Largs with the corner taken short by Bainbridge into R.Coupar, who in turn found Robson with a header on target though it was taken by the keeper. Boswell were a threat at this stage and again it took a good save from Irwin to deny the Ayr striker.
The game was end to end, and on 15 minutes it was McTaggart who played a neat ball through to Smith, though the keeper came of his line to save well. Robson was showing up well at the back for Largs with some excellent tackling and clearing headers, keeping Boswell at bay.
The visitors were beginning to take control of the match, and were applying pressure down the flanks to test Leishman and Loudon. In the middle, Weir was using his pace and strength to keep the visitors at bay.
Inside the last five minutes of the first half and Colts created a couple of excellent chances. First it was Brown to strike for goal which was saved for a corner, the ball bounced inside the six yard area and somehow didn’t go in. Next it was R.Coupar who was taken out for a Colts free kick. Weir found R.Coupar who in turn played it for Bainbridge to strike only for the ball to crash back of the bar just before the half time whistle.
Half Time: Largs Colts 0-0 Ayr Boswell
Colts brought on Barbour for Leishman at the start of the second half, and inside the first minute, Brown made space down the left for a shot which was well saved again by the Boswell keeper. The Largs midfield was battling well and winning more of the ball to setup attacks. Five minutes into the second half and Boswell broke well and it took a brave clearance from Irwin to deny the Ayr striker a shot on goal.
On 44 minutes Colts pressed the ball high and won a throw in which was taken quickly. Smith crossed the ball superbly well for Brown to strike home for the opener, and to send the home side into raptures.
Almost straight away the visitors could of had an equaliser. From the kick off they weaved their way through the Largs defence and won a free kick. Fortunately for Colts, the ball flew wide of the target. Colts had further chances to extend the lead and had an excellent move which started from the keeper via the full back through to Bainbridge who struck with power, though it just cleared the bar.
The home side really were growing in confidence since opening the scoring, and Cormack had an effort which almost doubled the advantage, but also just went over the crossbar. Smith went on a strong run before slipping a neat ball for Brown who struck the post though the referee called play back for what must have been a tight offside decision.
Largs were well on top at this stage and McTaggart had a chance from a free kick though it was cleared. Cormack was then replaced by J.Coupar with McTaggart moving to right midfield. Smith was then through on the keeper and his shot came back off the post and clear. Colts must have been concerned that the crucial second goal would not come but just a minute later J.Coupar played the ball for Bainbridge who then found Brown, and the clinical striker found the bottom right corner of the goal for his and Largs second of the game.
Robson then made way for Blair with Smith going back into defence and the powerful Blair up top with Brown. Inside the last minute, J.Coupar picked up the ball deep and played it over the defence for Blair, and With the keeper rushing out of his box Blair got there first and the keeper saved, with both hands outside the box. The referee waved played on and although Colts followed up they couldn’t find the net. Colts played out the three minutes of added time with no major scares to see out an important victory against the team sitting fourth in the league.
Full Time: Largs Colts 2-0 Ayr Boswell
After the defeat against Galston before the Christmas break this was a great response from the Largs boys who move to within two points of the league leaders and into a clear second place. After a patchy first half, Colts stepped up the performance and played some excellent football in the second period. All three units of defence, midfield and attack played well with the coaches Man of the Match vote going to Bainbridge for another excellent performance of strength and creativity for Colts. A special word for Boswell Manager, Ian Thomson, for positive coaching and good sportsmanship throughout.
Colts welcome Prestwick Community to Barrfields next Saturday, 23rd January, at 10:30 as they look to consolidate their league position. The boys, coaches and parents appreciate the support from those that can make it along to cheer on the boys.
