Crosshouse BC under 15s were crowned champions of the SYFA Trans World Soccer Youth Cup Final with a dramatic late victory over Renfrew Victoria at Airdrie’s Excelsior Stadium. A last gasp winner by Connor Smith sealed the victory for the Ayrshire side in a thrilling contest.
Renfrew Victoria started the better side and were soon on the attack; Ben Harwood broke free from his marker and unleashed a shot from twenty yards out but the ball was well held by Jamie Wilson in the Crosshouse goal.
Crosshouse were next to test the opposing goalkeeper fifteen minutes into the match; the ball was played into Robbie Laidlaw in the box but the midfielder’s glancing header was well saved by the goalkeeper.
Despite Renfrew’s strong start, Crosshouse began to command the match and took the lead twenty-five minutes in; a corner was played into the box and Connor Smith rose above his marker to score from a few yards out.
Almost instantly Renfrew were on the attack; following a monstrous punt down the park by goalkeeper Aaron McKissock, forward Harwood latched onto the ball and poke the shot towards goal but the ball came crashing off the post and Crosshouse maintained their lead.
Despite the missed chance, Renfrew took the lead a few minutes later; Craig Corbett picked up the ball and slotted a pass through to Lennon Houston who expertly finished under the keeper’s legs, much to the delight of the travelling Renfrew fans.
Renfrew seemed to be on the ascendency but were pinned back immediately and found themselves behind again at half time; forward player Jordan Mason launched the ball into the box and Smith rose, once again, to header the ball into the corner of the net.
The first half was then brought to a close and both sides went into the break with a very good chance to claim victory in the cup final.

Around ten minutes into the second half Crosshouse put themselves further into the lead; a long ball was played forward into the box, Mason chested the ball down for the oncoming Bailey McClung who rifled the ball into the top corner of the net.
Three minutes later the game took a further twist and Renfrew pulled a goal back; Jamie Paterson skipped away from his marker and threaded a ball into Harwood who coolly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.
Renfrew were then gifted the chance to draw level when they won a penalty twenty minutes into the match; Harwood was brought down in the box and the striker stepped up to slot home the resulting penalty and draw the Paisley side level.
Following a series of chances for either side, the game looked to be heading into extra time but Crosshouse were not having that and clinched the cup with a last minute goal; Kyle Chisholm made space for himself on the right side and cut the ball back to Smith who rifled the ball into the top corner – McKissock had absolutely no chance of saving the effort and the Crosshouse fans erupted in ecstasy; it was a dramatic end to a fantastic cup final.
A few seconds later the referee brought an end to the match and the Crosshouse faithful seemed delighted with the victory; this was most certainly a very entertaining match and both teams looked to be in with a shout of winning it right up until the final minutes. Smith’s goal will always be remembered by the players and fans alike and the Crosshouse players should take great credit from the hard-fought victory.

Connor Smith - he was influential all match and scored a hattrick - he did not put a foot wrong throughout the match.
Ben Harwood - the striker looked dangerous all game and bagged a double, he should be very proud of his performance.
Magic Moment
Crosshouse BC
Renfrew Victoria YFC
The final goal; absolutely no doubt in my mind. This will live long in the memory of the players and it is, by far, the magic moment for Crosshouse.
The third goal; it took all of Renfrew’s energy to grab that equaliser and they were delighted to get it, they could’ve gone on and won the game at that moment.
