Largs come out on top in game of two halves

Fixture: Largs Spartans v Irvine Victoria
Competition: Liz Oglivie Challenge Cup
Date: 28/03/15

On a windy day for a game of football at Barrfields, Largs Spartans welcomed Irvine Victoria in the first round of the Challenge cup. The sides have met twice before this season and the visitors had won both by a single goal.

However after a strong display in the draw with Tass last week, the home side were feeling very confident going into the match.

Playing in to what was a very strong wind in the first half, Largs spent most of their time defending, but defending well.

Victoria were limited to the odd half chance and again the back four of Bone, Herrero-Redden, Stewart & Clive were solid. Griffins was causing havoc with his strong running and when he was set up by Allen he was unlucky not to score, shooting just wide.

Victoria did however take the lead after 20 minutes when a long shot found its way past Kane. Victoria continued to push and a mixture of good defending and poor finishing kept the score at 0-1 at the break.

Half Time : Largs Spartans 0-1 Irvine Victoria

Into the second half and it was all Largs. McShane came on for Mills to give some support to Griffins up front. He held the ball up well, and the game was all being played in the Victoria half.

Herrero-Redden was having another good game in the centre of defense with his pace at the back sweeping up any danger. Indeed it was from his clearance that the ball broke through to Griffins who simply passed the ball into the bottom left-hand corner to level the game.

Vics weren’t really in the second half and Spartans continued to push for the winner. And it eventually came with a lovely strike from Herrero-Redden. Victoria cleared a cross from Allen and from a full 30 yards out, Herrero-Redden caught it perfectly and although the keeper got a touch to it he couldn’t keep it out.

10 to go and Victoria did all they could to put this game into extra time but Docherty & Bainbridge were working hard in midfiled to close them down.

The full time whistle went and Largs go through to the next round. Another great game between two evenly matched teams but Largs just edged it this time.

This month’s Match balls are again sponsored by Mills Milk and are much appreciated by all at Largs Spartans.
