Hutchison Vale eventually over came a dogged Edina Hibs side 5-2 to secure the three points in this Division 1 League Cup fixture at Meggetland. The visitors went ahead through goals from Crolla and McCole but the home side responded with goals from Barfoot, Gray, Skinner and a double from Ferrier.

Hutchison Vale got the game underway and should have opened the scoring in the opening minute. Cieran Dunne found himself one one one with Brodie Kennedy in the Edina goal but he fired straight at the keeper from 15 yards and then put the rebound over the bar.

Edina's first chance came on the 11th minute when Sean McCole's powerful drive saw Sam Colley palm the shot over his head towards his goal but Jack Murray was on hand to clear the danger.

Hutchie were architects of their own downfall after Colley picked up a back pass and provided Edina with an indirect free kick 16 yards out. Connor Young tapped the ball to Luka Crolla who found the right hand corner and put the under dogs in front 13 minutes into the half.

For all the home sides fantastic play and ball retention they found themselves going further behind on the 21st minute mark after Young played in a delicious ball to the back post where McCole was waiting unmarked to head home from four yards out to double Edina's lead.

Edina were a different team now and their players looked confident on the ball and willing to take on the Hutchie players, unlike in the earlier stages they looked a bit apprehensive to have a go.

The half hour mark saw the home side get back into the game from no where when Barfoot harmlessly picked the ball up 30 yards out and struck a sublime shot which flew over the helpless Kennedy's head into the roof of the net.

Lomond Grey should have levelled the game a minute later after a ball in from Dale Skinner from the right was perfectly played in but he got the header all wrong. Ferrier was next to try and get Hutchie on level terms but Kennedy produced a great one handed save to turn the ball behind for a corner from his shot.

Hutchie were turning up the heat now and were tying Edina up in knots with their passing and movement and it was Kennedy who came to Edina's rescue again. He produced another super one handed save to tip the ball over the bar from a corner.

Edina were defending bravely and were throwing their bodies on the line to try and preserve their lead until the half time break but they still had more defending to do as Hutchie poured forward in wave after wave of attack.

The half time whistle blew in this intriguing match with Edina leading and most certainly the happier of the the two teams for the break after soaking up so much pressure.

Edina got the game restarted after the break but Hutchie started off where they finished the first half, on the attack.

Kennedy had to be brave when Hutchie's Gray bore down on him but he stood up big and strong to deny him, but the Hutchie pressure was building and building and it looked like it was only time before the Edina goal was breached again.

This proved to be the case when Hutchie drew level on the 52nd minute after Dunne found Ferrier on the left. He played the ball across the front of goal and Kennedy could not get to it and Gray tapped in at the back post from only two yards out.

Two minutes later and Hutchie found themselves in front for the first time in the match when Ferrier found himself 20 yards out in a central position. His well struck shot took a slight deflection which probably just wrong footed Kennedy but it was certainly his goal.

Edina looked deflated at conceding a quick double in two minutes and it could have been worse if not for Selkeld who put in a great tackle to deny Ferrier from scoring again.

It was all hands to the pump for Edina defensively as Hutchie came looking for more with Lamb and Ferrier coming close with a shot just wide of the right hand post and a volley from 25 yards going narrowly wide of the left hand post respectively.

With an hour gone, Hutchie had the ball in the back of the visitors net again after Dunne played in Daniel Nichol at the back post who fired home. The referee though deemed him off side.

It was becoming a contest of attack versus defence and it was Hutchie's attack that came out on top with 67 minutes gone. Ferrier showed great footwork to evade several tackles as he made his way into the box and showed excellent composure to slot the ball into the right hand corner beyond Kennedy and claim his second of the match.

Edina were still working hard and a long ball forward was latched onto by Crolla. He played a give and go with McCole and forced Colley into a good save low to his right.

Normal service was resumed though and the ever impressive Dunne drove to the goal line and his cut back was side footed home in the 74th minute by Skinner from close in to put the game well and truly beyond a dogged Edina side.

The shrill of the final whistle filled the air and brought this intriguing game to an end. A game that Hutchison Vale dominated from start to finish but Edina gave them a fright and never gave up the fight but in the end the men in yellow and black proved just too strong.

Hutchison Vale have a free week next weekend whilst Edina are back in League Cup action at home to Dalkeith CYP.

Cieran Dunne - A thorn in the side of the visitors all day down the left and showed great ability with his pace, skill and invention. The only downside for him was that he never got on the score sheet but a super over all display.
Brodie Kennedy - It can be a lonely place as a goal keeper at times and you can be the target for other players frustration but this was not the case today for the visitors keeper as he produced save after save to keep their noses in front and when his team did go behind he did the same to keep the score respectable.

A first class display between the sticks.

Michael Barfoot's 30 yard pile driver to get his team on the score sheet and back into the game.
