Hutchie took all three points with the goals coming in the second half from Williamson and Robertson to secure a 0-2 away win against Loanhead and move one point behind their opponents in the league table

A breezy and chilly Lasswade High School was the venue for this first division clash which was played out on the 3g pitch.

The home side got the game underway and it was the visitors who had the first attempt at goal when Devin Burnside tested Ben Mackenzie from 22 yards out but the keeper saved comfortably.

Michael Hutchison played a lovely ball into the box for Ryan Porteous but the home side were thwarted by Hutchie's Ross Currie who calmly played the ball back to his keeper Scott Page who cleared up field.

Porteous was involved minutes later for Loanhead when he became provider for Lawrence Naismith but his shot was blocked and knocked out for a corner. The resulting corner from the left was played long to the back post which was cleared up field, picked up by Currie who tried his luck from distance but his ambitious shot from distance flew high over the bar.

Loanhead were pressing Hutchie high up the park in the opening stages and the visitors centre backs were being given no time on the ball and this forced them into conceding another corner.  A ball played again to the back post which was met by the head of Porteous but his goal bound header was cleared by Adam Murray to take some pressure of the Hutchie back line.

Hutchie were next to threaten after William Kerr slid in Jonathan Grotlin but Mackenzie save well with his feet and to his relief saw the follow up put wide by Burnside.

The game had a good tempo to it and Loanhead were still chasing everything down especially Naismith who just terrorized the Hutchie defence as he chased and harried at every opportunity.

Porteous who seemed to be involved with everything for the home side showed his defensive qualities this time when he made a great tackle which he had to get spot on to halt the Hutchie players advancement inside the box.

Loanhead's Liam Matthew shot high over the bar from 18 yards after good work between Naismith and Samuel Jones set him up for the opportunity then minutes later Andrew McNeill played a lovely through ball to that man Naismith again but the wind just carried the ball to far which was shepherded out by Ryan Hutchison for a goal kick.

Hutchie were awarded a free kick with 25 minutes gone in a central position 25 yards out and Craig Williamson lined it up but his powerful strike went just over the bar. This was really the closest anyone had come with neither side creating a real clear goal scoring opportunity of note.

Both teams were starting to look for the ball over the top and get in behind the opposition back line and Kerr tried this tactic but Currie who was winning the majority of the high balls played into his box headed clear again.

The first real chance came on the half hour mark when Fraser Shearer played in a wind assisted free kick from just inside the opposition half which was met by Matthew's who saw his downward header beat Page in the Hutchie goal but unfortunately for him a Hutchie player was on hand to clear the ball off the line to stop the home side going in front.

The first booking off the game came 31 minutes in after Frankie John Bee unceremoniously chopped down Jones on the right hand side 25 yards out. Porteous took the free kick and floated a high ball into the box which saw John Pearson get his header all wrong and headed back towards his own goal but Page reacted quickly to collect.

It was pretty much all the home side now and Connor Lawrie played the ball to Matthew's who played it back into his path but his shot across goal went harmlessly wide. Ten minutes to half time Loanhead were gifted another opportunity after Porteous was brought down from behind 22 yards out in a central position. Shearer stepped up and came close after his powerful dead ball strike went narrowly past the post.

Loanhead looked as though they had taken the lead but Page produced a piece of magic to deny them. McNeill played in a free kick from the right and Jones met the ball at the far post with a bullet header but it crashed off the post for Porteous to follow in but Page pulled off a point blank save to deny the Loanhead man who must have been ready to celebrate breaking the deadlock, Porteous again went looking for the opener but this time his effort went high over the bar.

Hutchie were getting a bit frustrated and were guilty of giving silly free kicks away and again Loanhead profited as they were awarded another free kick but Hutchison played it too long and the wind carried into the keepers grasp.

The home side were pressing for the opener and after some neat foot work Matthew he played a square ball to Hutchison but he blasted over the bar from 20 yards.

After all the home sides pressure it was Hutchie who could have gone into the break in front when in added on time a free kick was played into Dean Robertson who knocked the ball down for Burnside who struck a low driven shot towards goal but Mackenzie got down well to his left to save.

Both teams made changes at half time and the game resumed with the visitors kicking off.

Williamson had the first attempt on goal when his shot was saved by Loanhead's Mackenzie but this was quickly followed up by the home side when Jack Fairgrieve headed over the bar from a corner.

Williamson thought he had sprung the off side trap but referee deemed he had just strayed off side much to the visitors annoyance and then Ryan Hutchison saw his free kick cleared. The Hutchie players did not agree with some of the refs decisions and Grotlin found himself becoming the second player to go into Mtr Ferguson's little black book for remonstrating a bit to strongly.

It was Calum Smart who played in yet another Loanhead corner which was met Jones who put his header wide of the post and then a couple of shots within a minute of each other called Page in the Hutchie goal into action again when he saved from both Michael Hutchison and then Porteous.

Just as it looked like Loanhead were starting to just take control again they found themselves behind with 62 minutes gone. Robertson started the move as he played in Burnside who found Grotlin on the right who struck a fierce shot which could only see Mackenzie palmed it out into the path off Williamson who finished from about six yards leaving Mackenzie no chance.

Loanhead got the game restarted and went on the attack with Naismith but his cross went out for a goal kick. Hutchie then replied when Burnside saw his shot comfortably saved by Mackenzie and then a free kick gave Burnside another opportunity to test Mackenzie but his free kick went straight down the keepers throat.

Loanhead were not going to lie down with Michael Hutchison getting a good strike away but the ball just went wide of the keepers right hand post and this was followed up when Naismith showed good work down the right and played the ball into Smart who had a couple of attempts to score before Page finally got control of the ball.

Smart was causing problems for Hutchie down the left and after cutting inside he laid of a ball to Jones who saw his shot tipped brilliantly round the post by Page for a corner and then Smart came close minutes later when he resumed his joust with the Hutchie number one but he was denied again by Page who brilliantly tipped his delicate lob wide for another corner.

Hutchie were on the attack and a super tackle by Liam Taylor led to a corner for the visitors. The team in yellow and black should have doubled their lead from the resulting corner when John Pearson found himself free at the back post with an open goal at his mercy he put his header wide. His frustration was clear to see for everyone as he knew that he had missed a great opportunity  to get on the score sheet.

Loanhead had the bit between their teeth now and went looking for the equalizer but as with so often when you push forward you are susceptible to the counter attack and this was exactly what happened.

The home side pushed everyone up for a corner with eight minutes remaining but when the corner was cleared they were caught up field and a long ball in the opposite direction from Burnside found Robertson on the left who drove into the box, picked his spot and unleashed an unstoppable shot to double the visitors lead.

The home side picked up a booking on the 84th after a very rash challenge by Weston who was lucky as on another day and another ref the outcome might have been worse.

Bee had two bites at the cherry to try and increase the visitors lead when he miss kicked his first shot but his second attempt was right at Mackenzie.

A super move which shifted the ball from the left side of the park to the right nearly ended with Loanhead getting a goal back to make the closing 5 minutes of this game very interesting.

Taylor shifted the ball to his right to Michael Hutchison who played the ball to his right to McNeill who slid in Currie just inside the box who was very unfortunate to see his fierce drive come on the top of the bar and out for a goal kick.

Into added on time and Hutchie's Kerr managed to get a shot away but Mackenzie saved, then Loanhead's Weston had an opportunity but his weak shot caused Page no problems.

Hutchie had a great chance to increase their advantage in the dying seconds when Grotlin played a great ball across the face of goal from the right but sadly none of his team mates had decided to follow the ball in and a great chance for someone to get a tap in went a begging.

Loanhead probably felt aggrieved they did not get something out of this game as they dominated the majority of the play and had enough chances to win the game whilst Hutchie although maybe not at their best today dug deep to get a result and an important three points.

Both teams go into the festive break for the next few weeks before resuming their football in the New Year.
