JYHS started the stronger and were winning everything. Kahl was playing in the hole, winning headers and tackles in midfield and supporting Craig upfront when he could.
James Young were getting in behind on both flanks causing the Preston Lodge defence real problems. Both Dom and Liam got beyond their markers early on and put in good crosses to Craig's head, but he couldn't find the target.
On six minutes Domaldinho made an appearance. He turned is man before driving at the defence, he beat three men before working the ball on to his right, unfortunately as it sat up nicely, he connected with a shot that reminded me of my four year old niece playing in the garden, needless to say, he didn't trouble the keeper!
Our finishing was less than clinical and three minutes later, another chance passed. This time Dom and Kahl combined well on the left before working the ball centrally to Craig. He hit a good shot but saw it come off the bar.. The rebound came back to him and he played in Kieran who hit a low shot close to the right hand post, but the keeper made the save.
2minutes later and another two chances. Both came down the right. Firstly Liam drove to the bye line before cutting the ball back, Cully ran from deep and met it first time but his shot cleared the bar.
Then another delivery from Liam, this time from the edge of the box. A great deep cross looked to be going right on to Kahl's head for a certain goal, but the keeper got an important touch to flick it away for a corner.
On sixteen mins Kahl found himself in on goal. Cully sent him through, he took a touch on the edge of the box and rifled a shot, the keeper stood tall and touched it over for a corner.
Twenty two minutes gone and we were in complete control, we'd had eight good opportunities to score and Preston Lodge had barely been out of their half. Surely we couldn't keep this up.
Then the inevitable happened, a long ball from their keeper got caught in the low sun. As we let it bounce, their number nine flicked it to their ten on the edge of the box. He took a touch before rifling an unstoppable shot which went over Joe, then dipped into the top corner, 1-0 to Preston Lodge.
This rocked us and gave PL the confidence to come at us. They used the long high ball to good effect, missing out our midfield and playing off their striker. 30 mins gone and we were two down. Another long ball down their right. They played a high cross field pass to the number nine who flicked the ball over his head before an unbelievable chip over Joe and into the far corner, 2-0.
We could have fell to pieces but we tried to get back into it before half time. We had two good chances that we should have scored with. The first fell to Kieran. He was played through by Craig on the edge of the box. He took a touch before hitting the shot, but from 5 yards he found the side netting.
The next chance saw the roles reversed. This time Kieran delivered from the right, as his cross bounced in the area, the PL defender knocked it goal wards, Craig found himself with his back to goal, two yards out and the keeper nowhere, if he had swivelled he had a tap in, but, thinking he was offside, he tried the back heel and the shot went wide.
Half Time : James Young High School 0-2 Preston Lodge High School
James Young couldn't believe the scoreline but were confident that we would create more chances if we kept playing the same way, we just had to be alert to the counter.
The second half kicked off and we immediately went on the attack down our left. Dom beat the right back who blatantly fouled him gaining a yellow. The freekick went back post but Kahl headed just over.
Three minutes in and it looked like game over. Yet another long ball to the No.9. He beat the defence, rounded Joe and slotted into the far corner.
With thirty minutes left on the clock we decided to change to a 3-5-2. Connell and Kieran came off for Aaron and David. Andrew took responsibility for their No.9 and kept him quiet for the rest of the game.
The next thirty minutes was an onslaught on their goal. We had twenty minutes of crosses, corners, and shots but with no real joy. Everything we did was playing in to their hands, we played far too close to the keeper and made it easy for them to defend.
With fourteen minutes left, the game changed. Kahl and the Preston Lodge right back picked up their second yellows and both had to walk. This opened up a bit of space in their defence and two minutes later we were back in the game.
David was having a good impact in the middle of the park and he played a pass to Craig that eventually worked its way wide to Liam, who hit it across the keeper and into the far corner, 3-1.
As we tried to get the ball back quickly the keeper pushed one of our players and picked up a yellow. Unfortunately he had already received one in the first half and he was off.
