Under 15's Division 2 League Cup
08 December 2014
This was a game played on a day not designed for pretty football, it was always going to be a battle in the mud and thats exactly what it became.
During the warm up behind the goals the grass was cutting up badly and both teams new it was going to be hard going for the duration of the game.
Spartans started the better of the two teams as they playing up the hill and managed to keep the ball in Tynecastles half for the early 10 mins of the game without making to many clear cut chances.
Tynecastle eventually got going and held a good percentage of the play mid first half. Neither of the two teams where testing the goalies as the game got bogged down in mid field with such a heavy pitch.
Spartans opened the scoring in 22 mins when a ball in from the wide left found  Garland who switched the play through to Kelly his first touch wasnt great and took him away from goal but he recovered by turning the defender in the box and cutting back across the 18 yard line before fireing a great shot high into the keepers top right hand corner of the net.
The keeper had no chance with such a great stike and it was no more than Spartans deserved for the battling performance.
Tynecastle rallied and tried pushing the ball wide down Spartans flanks as they searched for an equalizer a one on one with the goalie saw the spartans keeper turn the ball out for a corner but Spartans defended well to take there lead into half time.
Half Time : Tynecastle FC Colts 0-1 Spartans Reds
Half time both teams made a couple of substitutions as the pitch took it toll on tired legs.
Tynecastle started brighter in the second half as they pushed for an equalizer and put a couple of early chances past the post as they applied the pressure.
Eventually Tynecastles hard work paid of with an equalizer in 60 mins when the tynecastle mid field who where pressing the ball early and high up the park won the ball back out on the wide left position and feeding it through to the striker who took a touch and fired it low into the corner of the net from 16 yards for a well taken goal.
Spartans defended well for the next five minutes as Tynecastle tried to get the winner.
Spartans dug in and made a switch to freshen it up, they where now making the better of the chances a one on one with the Tynecastle goalie saw him make a great stop from Spartans Glen Aitken.
Then a good chance fell to Foster at the back post but his well struck effort went narrowly past the upright.
Tynecastle weathered the storm as Spartans pushed to get back in front but it was Tynecastle who nearely took the lead after a good passage of play down there right wing ended in Smith having a snap shot from the edge of the box which slide narrowly past the keepers post.
The ice cold wind and rain was taking its toll on the pitch and the brave spectators.
Next it was Spartans chance to take the lead as Kelly again tore down the left wing past the right back and squared the ball to Brydon in the centre of the box he got his feet stuck in the mud and as he tried to guide it into the empty net hit the post and the keeper made a brave stop at his feet from the rebound a great chance lost to take the lead but this didnt dampen Spartans who brought Liam Philps back on after being substituted earlier, he was quickly involved with the play fresh legs showed as he ran in on goal from the wide left position beating two players he switched the ball onto his right and fired an unstoppable shot high into the net of the underside of the crossbar from just inside the box.
Couple of corners in the next passage of play nearly saw Spartans extend the lead but Tynecastle battled on and tried to get the scores level but Spartans where worthy winners on the day.
Credit to both teams for showing a willingness to battle it out and create a very entertaining display under the circumstance and conditions.
Best for Spartans D Munros energy was tireless great performance.
Best for Tynecastle D Whalen put in a great shift and covered a lot of ground.
