Redhall Star put in an excellent performance to secure their second win in the League Cup.
Goals from Sam Donachie, Marc Hannah and Nathan Robertson put the visitors 3-0 up. Spartans got one back before half time but second half goals from Marc Hannah and Robbie Campbell secured the points.
Prior to the kick off we had a right mixture as the weather produced four seasons in a twenty minute spell.
By the kick off the conditions had calmed down. The first fifteen minutes were equal with both teams giving a good account of themselves without any clearcut chances.
The first chance of the game fell to Robbie Campbell, twenty yards from goal, but the Spartans keeper saved well to his right.
Spartans had a chance to take the lead as a through ball caught out the Redhall rearguard. Spartans O'Connor was in on goal but his shot produced a wonderful save from Ryan Green. O'Connor was onto the rebound but Green was back on his feet to pull off another fantastic save to keep it level. Fantastic goalkeeping.
Dark clouds descended overhead but it was Redhall who lit up the game with the opening goal. Green launched his goal kick downfield. Nathan Robertson rose to flick the ball on. Sam Donachie gambled on the flick and burst into the box, holding off the Spartans defender and drilling the ball low into the net. Good finish.
Spartans Ronaldson was a driving force in the midfield as he attempted to get the home side moving forward but his long run forward was cleared by the combination of Redhall's Rory Taylor and Ewan Mitchell.
Redhall were soon back on the attack as Adam Shortiss won the ball on halfway. His pass to Nathan Robertson was then quickly played to Sam Donachie who controlled and played a superb defence splitting pass which Marc Hannah got on the end of, Hannah rounded the keeper and stroked the ball into the empty net to put the vistors two up.
Confidence spread through the Redhall ranks as they went three up. Hannah and Lewis Blues combined down the right flank. A throw in ended at the feet on Robbie Campbell who waltzed past the defender and played a pass to Nathan Robertson who turned and fired past the keeper.
Redhall were playing some neat football and fully deserved this lead.
Right on half time Spartans got a lifeline as a mix up between Campbell and Crowley allowed Ronaldson to burst forward. A ball through had O'Connor in on goal and he fired past Green to gice the home side a glimmer of hope.
Half Time : Spartans Blues 1-3 Redhall Star
The second half started in near darkness as the black clouds moved in with the rain and sleet being blown across the pitch.
Spartans pushed to get back into the game with Redhal content to keep them at bay.
The impressive Devers had a chance for the home side and he danced down the right flank and cut inside. His shot was blocked by Green but the defence failed to clear with Devers firing his next attempt over the bar.
Green then had to dive full length to keep out a twenty five yard strike from Ronaldson.
Spartans were well on top but it was Redhall with the next chance. Jack Anderson put Hannah away down the right. His cross fell at the feet of the on rushing Shortiss but his effort flew over the bar.
Spartans had the next chance with the shot on goal blocked for a corner. The ball was swung in but Green was up well to claim.
Twenty minutes to go and Redhall secured the win with a fourth goal. Taylor won the ball on halfway and knocked it forward to Robertson. Spartans defender blocked the shot with the ball falling to Marc Hannah who knocked home his second and Redhall's fourth.
This knocked the stuffing out of Spartans as the lights eventually came on.
Redhall made a few changes where Blair Salvona and Tommy Robertson very nearly created a fifth goal but they didn't have to wait to long as Adam Robertson played a good ball to Robbie Campbell who went off, past one, past two and another before cutting back and firing his shot, high past the keeper into the roof of the net. A fine individual goal.
The visitors saw out the game to record a fine 5-1 win which puts them top of their group with two wins from two games. Man of the match was Nathan Robertson, who held the ball up superbly, scored one and assisted with two of the five goals.
