James Young were without regular centre backs Jamie and Corey, all our strikers, Craig Kahl and Aaron. And to top things off Luke was also unavailable. Joe Mitchell came along and took the gloves to 'save'. the day.
North Berwick started well and immediately put our back line under pressure. Joe had no time to settle in and was immediately put to work. He made two great stops within the first five minutes. North Berwick piled on the pressure and forced 3 corners which were well delivered to the back post but were dealt with by Malcolm and Kieran.
On twelve minutes James Young took the lead. Owen F took the ball short from Joe and played into Dom's feet. He turned and started running. This was pure Domaldinho as he skipped past three defenders on route to the near post where he cooly slotted past the keeper.
This was against the run of play and unfortunately it wasn't long before North Berwick had equalised. Their keeper was kicking long to their giant striker and with good effect. Malcolm was competing well but the striker got in first and flicked the ball to the Berwick number ten who had run from midfield. He controlled the ball before turning inside Andrew and slotting into the far corner giving Joe no chance.
North Berwick used this tactic again and again. They had mixed success as Andrew and Malcolm finally switched on to the flick but on twenty minutes they forced a corner. The ball was delivered and Malcolm got up to clear. Unfortunately he didn't get enough height or distance on it. James Young were slow to react and the Berwick striker caught it sweetly and fired it into the top corner.
James Young looked shocked, but the truth was they had been second to every ball. They were allowing North Berwick them to control the midfield and looked sluggish when tracking back.
Going behind seemed to spark James Young into action. Cully started to get to grips with their number ten which allowed Calum Dunn to start playing some through passes. Dom, Liam and Kai all had good opportunities to drive at the defence and they forced good saves from the keeper.
James Young dominated the rest of the half, forcing plenty corners and free kicks.
Half Time : James Young High School 1-2 North Berwick
James Young were confident that we had fought our way back into the game and had worked out their simple but effective game plan. We switched Liam into midfield to give us more running and put Calum up top.
Immediately James Young looked more effective and were pressing the midfield much more effectively. Cully had been chipping away at the number ten all game and five minutes in the midfielder reacted with a bit of language that the ref decided merited a straight red.
Calum forced a good save from the keeper but the ball fell to Kai. He hit it sweetly, but it was blocked on the line by the defender. The referee said he had deliberately used his hand so it was a penalty and another red card. Cully stood up and made no mistake.
Fifteen minutes in and we had taken the lead. Kieran drove out from the back before playing the ball down the line for David. He smashed a great cross into the 6 yard box which the defender was forced to turn into his own net under good pressure from Calum.
We definitely had the momentum now and with North Berwick now down to nine, surely we had to go on and win.
Five minutes later and we looked to have extended our lead. Cully, who was now on a booking, had switched with Kai to reduce the risk of a sending off. He played a great through ball for Calum who beat his man, stepped inside the keeper and slotted home. Unfortunately the ref saw an offside and the goal was disallowed.
As would be expected, James Young dominated the rest of the half but we were wasteful with our opportunities and our passing was really slack. As the game wore on we looked a tired side.
North Berwick, despite being down to nine, made full use of their five subs and the fresh legs kept hounding and working to press us.
Amazingly in injury time, their hard work paid off. North Berwick hit James Young at pace and drove a shot into the far corner giving Joe no chance.
With a minute left James Young managed two more chances. Firstly, Calum ran from kick off and forced a great save from the keeper. Then after another good move down the left the goal opened up for Cully but his low shot just went wide of the post.
