  • Peter O'Neill Cup - Final
Hutchison Vale won 4-2 on penalties in a tight match between Newcraighall Leith Vics to win the Peter O’Neill Cup.
They managed to keep their cool scoring all their penalties as the game finished 1-1 after extra time with both teams having a number of chances during the thrilling match.
Hutchison Vale almost had a dream start when Daniel Lock lobbed the keeper in the third minute but Tylar McGee pulled off a great save.
The first real chance for Newcraighall came in the eleventh minute as James Henderson put a great ball into the box from a free kick but Mark Tennant narrowly headed the ball wide.
Just as Newcraighall started to dominate the game, Hutchison Vale got the first goal of the game after a goalkeeper error.
McGee spilled the ball from what looked like an easy save and all Brandon Blair had to do was guide the ball into the back of the net in the 26th minute.
Newcraighall never let that bother them and continued to threaten in the final third.
They were unlucky once again in the 2nd minute of added time when James Smith hit the crossbar.

Sean Ward created the first chance of the second half in the 42nd minute after he hit the ball just over the bar. It was encouraging for Newcraighall with fantastic build up play between Ward and the two forwards -John Robertson and Yrick Gallantes.
Ward made up for his miss just a couple of minutes later with a fantastic strike just inside the box to make it 1-1.
As both teams tried their best to get a winning goal, they could not make it count in the final third with both defences remaining strong.
Newcraighall keeper, McGee again pulled off a great save at the end of the second half tipping an excellent effort by Lewis McCann over the bar.

As the game went into extra time both teams struggled to keep possession with both teams looking tired after an energetic 70 minute game.

Hutchison Vale goalkeeper, Ciaran Cairns pulled off a great save as he showed no fear in a 2 v 1 situation when Newcraighall’s forwards Robertson and Gallantes got away from their markers in the box.

What made the match so exciting for the crowd were both teams desire to press forward and a fine example of this was shown in the last minute of extra time as Newington’s defender, Arran Bathgate headed just over the bar as Hutchison Vale breathed a sigh of relief.

After an entertaining ninety minutes of football the Peter O’Neill Cup was to be decided by a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, Finlay Connor netted for Newcraighall as did Lewis McCann for Hutchison Vale but Newcraighall’s next two penalties were unsuccessful.

Hutchison Vale made it four out of four with Declan McFadden keeping his composure to score the winning penalty and finished it off by sprinting to his team with his top off to celebrate.

It was hard to pick out one player as they all worked well as a team. I have to commend all four penalty takers who did not show any nerves- McCann, McMahon, Blair and McFadden.
Yrick Gallantes for his vision throughout the match to play in his team mates and create a number of chances. He seemed to be one step ahead as he seemed to know where his next pass would be before the ball even reached his feet.
