For the majority of this past week, it’s felt like summer has came back and there was a repeat at Grant Street Park, home of Highland League side Clachnacuddin as Nicolson were aiming to win their first Scottish Cup at Under 18 level against Firrhill who reached their second final in the last three years.
Nicolson were sure to make an early impression on the game and took an early lead after a great ball was cut into the penalty box by Jodie Sinclair which was met by Leanne McDonald who rifled the ball into the bottom left hand corner.
Firrhill had a chance of their straight after the goal, a long diagonal ball from Emma Birch found its way into Sophie Cunningham who turned a Institute defender before trying to sneak the ball into the bottom left hand corner however it just went inches wide.
The Edinburgh side found their way back into the game and Cunningham who played a big part for Firhill cut her pass into the pathway of Katy Anne Watt who timed her run to perfection to slide the ball past Gillies in the Nicolson goal.
It was a great start from both teams and the neutrals who managed to get away from their work to watch this showpiece event were treated to a very good start.

It was a tight opening to the 2nd half which chances limited for both teams, Firrhill’s Lucy Margaret Davidson was clean through on goal after a great through ball from Claire Williamson however Cirsty Gillies reacted well to turn it away.
Nicolson regained the lead again in the 76th minute after the Edinburgh outfit failed to clear their lines and the ball fell to Jodie McLeod who found space before wonderfully finding the bottom right hand corner with the Firrhill defence nowhere to be seen.
With the minutes counting down, it was all down to Firrhill to see how they would react and they did so in some fashion, Katie Almond went showed great determination to get up towards the Nicolson goal and then flashed a 20 yard effort into the roof of the net giving Gillies no chance.
Both teams were getting concerned about the fact that a goal any moment after that one would all but kill their hopes of getting their hands on the cup, with seconds remaining, the Nicolson bench were making decisions about who was taking penalties, it seemed to pay off.

Nicolson were up first and Beth MacLeod made no mistake with her spot-kick and then fellow colleague Cirsty Gillies put Nicolson in pole position with an excellent stop from Emma Birch.

Both teams tucked away their second and third penalties with ease before Leanne MacDonald put the pressure on Firrhill by scoring the fourth.

Gillies was to be the hero for Institute again when she had a stunning save to win Nicolson their first Scottish Cup at senior age group.
