Two goals in the second half saw Leith claim a deserved victory in a hard fought game at Leith Links. The weather was again a factor, with the wind making it very difficult for the players.
Leith started the brighter and should have opened the scoring after 2 minutes.   With an open goal at his mercy the ball was somehow skewed wide by Fraser Murdie, who on a different day would have had a hat trick in the opening 12 minutes.  Perhaps he left his scoring boots in the house.
The opening goal came with some neat play from the Leith midfield and forwards, the ball eventually ending up in the net finished by Murdie.
The equaliser was assisted by the wind.   The Merchiston player took a shot from 25 yards, it seemed to stay high in the air for a long time only to dip at the last second.   Lewis Reid managed to get his hand to it however the ball fell over the line and into the goal.  On the balance of play 1-1 at half-time was a fair reflection of the 1st half however Leith would have been kicking themselves due to the number of chances created.
Half time: Leith Athletic Colts 1-1 North Merchiston
Leith asserted themselves straight from the opening whistle of the second half, pushing hard for the second goal.  There seemed to be a pattern developing with several more chances being missed.  There were a few scares at the other end too as Merchiston were getting the ball forward quickly putting  the defensive pairing of Scotland & Coppola under pressure.  Both coping well however.
The second Leith goal was a cracker. The ball was fed into Michael Shaw who drove at the Merchiston defence.  His mazy run was finished with a left footed shot (a screamer) before the goalkeeper got a sniff, the ball finished high into the net.
Leith were pressing more and more with the third and final goal of the game coming from a header (Coppola) from a pin point corner from Eddington.
This was another good result by Leith and a solid squad performance with all 15 players contributing.  Although an off day for the forwards it won't be long before they are banging in the goals again.
