On Saturday 2nd March, 3rd placed Newcraighall played 4th placed Longniddry Villa in the Under 19s Division 2 League Cup.

These are always closely competed encounters with Newcraighall having the upperhand in the league this season with a narrow 2-1 win away at Longniddry and a recent 3-1 win in the reverse fixture.

The game started with Newcraighall applying the early pressure, looking to make their home advantage count. However after weathering that early pressure Longniddry took the lead with an excellent free kick by Adam Forsyth from about 5 yards outside the box. Not an unexpected outcome given Adam's ability at free kicks and a wonderful left foot.

What was unexpected was the manner of the next goal. Adam Forsyth and that left foot of his curled in an amazing corner, right in the top corner. That put Villa in control as the 1st half finished 2-0.

The anticipated fight back by Newcraighall wasnt long in coming when a challenge from Abraham Osman inside the box resulted in an early penalty, and a yellow card to boot.

The Newcraighall player calmly slotted the ball home, sending the keeper the wrong way. 2-1. Game on.

Although there wasnt much good passing football on display, there was the feel of a good old fashioned cup tie. Played in the right spirit.

Chances came and went for both teams and eventually After a scramble in Villas box, a Newcraighall striker pounced on a loose ball in the six yard box to bring the scores level at 2-2.

It was now anyones game, and both teams went for it. With only a few minutes to go, a ball into the Villa box was touched towards goal by a Newcraighall player, only for the ball to come back off the post into the keepers arms.

With extra time looking likely, and just seconds left, Villas Chris Baldie chased down a Newcraighall defender and won the ball which broke to Dan Garvey just outside the box. There was only going to be one outcome, Garvey stepped inside one defender and placed a great shot into the net from about 12 yards.

The Villa touchline went mad as the team celebrated with their match winner. Not long after the referee, S Luke who deserves a particular mention for his excellent performance, blew his whistle and Villa could enjoy a great cup victory.
