Milton travelled to fellow league contenders Murieston this week in the quarter-final of the West Lothian county cup. Having defeated Murieston 4-0 in a league fixture a few weeks ago, Milton knew this was still going to be a tough contest.

It was Murieston who took the lead on the 10th minute after one of the Milton players hands struck the ball on the goal line, the home team were awarded a penalty from which they converted and Milton found themselves reduced to 10 men.

Having 70 minutes to play and Murieston being a decent team, this was going to be a difficulttask for the Milton team. Although having the disadvantage on players, Milton were playing exceptionally well and there was no indication of a man down. They were duly rewarded on the 32nd minute when Craig Hunter made a run into the box and was brought down by the Murieston defender for the second penalty of the match. Robbie Sneddon stepped up to fire it past the Murieston keeper’s left hand side. The keeper got his hand on it but the power forced it in, giving Sneddon his 4th straight penalty conversion.

Four minutes later and Milton doubled their tally when Adam Beirne played the ball through to Edward McKenna who slotted it past the keeper from 5 yards.

Half Time: Murieston United 1-2 Milton FC

The second half got underway and both teams were battling for the ball. This was another great game to watch and it was visible that these were two teams who will be competing at the top of the league by the end of the season. With this being a cup fixture Milton were looking to put the disappointment behind them from their shock defeat to Broxburn in the regional cup last week, and on the 60th minute Milton went 3-1 ahead when Morgan Reid slotted the ball through the Murieston defence for Edward McKenna to score his second of the game with a clinical finish.

Milton were starting to make changes with players going on and off, but the squad kept the same system on the park and were still having most of the possession. Murieston were still having chances and were playing good football but Milton coped comfortably.

On the 69th minute it was game over when the same two players linked up again, Morgan Reid played the ball through to Edward McKenna for him to score his 3rd of the game and his 9th of the season.

The Murieston players, to their credit, were still pushing for the comeback but on the 88th minute Callum Rodger chased down the Murieston defender, got the ball off him, and squared it to Joe Tortolano who slotted it past the stranded goalkeeper from close range for this 6th goal of the season.

This was an excellent display from Milton having been reduced to 10 men after 9mins.

Players man of the match was Edward McKenna.

Milton wish Murieston all the best for the remainder of the season.

Next week we are back to league business with an away fixture to West Calder. We have an undefeated league start to protect and 800 minutes of league clean sheets.
