The October weather had already decided this was not a day for silky football, but give both teams credit for trying to get the ball on the ground and play football.

Chances were few and far between still Holytown got the opener on 21 minutes after a couple of blocked shots resulted in a scramble with Marc Newton slotting the ball from the edge of the box.
Helensburgh tried to battle back and claimed for a penalty after a long ball over the Holytown Colts defence resulted in a clash between the Colts Keeper and Helensburgh Striker. The referee gave a goal kick much to the disgust of the home team.
Graham Miller and Andy Cusick worked a neat short corner on the left wing with Graham Miller driving the ball low & hard across the six yard box Marc Newton was there again to provide a neat finish to the move.
Half Time: Helensburgh 0-2 Holytown Colts

There must have been some strong words at half time from the Helensburgh coach as they came out battling straight from kick off. The hard work paid off for Helensburgh on 50 minutes when Scott McGregor capitalised on a defensive error and raced through to beat the Holytown Keeper from 10 yards.
Helensburgh now had their heads up and chasing an equaliser. Holytown resisted the pressure and were still trying to go forward to finishing the game off with chances falling to Marc Newton and Stephen Battersby who both tried long range efforts only to just miss the target. Best chance of the second half fell to Andrew Girdwood, after a great cross from the left by Alex Bear he met the cross with a fantastic header only to see it fall narrowly wide of the target. Helensburgh threw everything into attack for the last few minutes but the additional strikers couldn't break down the strong Holytown defence.
