On Saturday 16th March on a cold, wet day Spartans 15's opened their League Cup campaign against Boroughmuir at Spartans Academy.

After a great pre-season, where Spartans have dominated games from early on, this tradition continued as a strong battling run down the right from Ellie Simpson found Ronaigh Douglas who played a lovely weighted pass to Sophie Cunningham who unleashed a fine strike past the Boroughmuir goalkeeper to take an early lead.

Boroughmuir pressed straight from the restart and soon got the equaliser following a slack back pass in the Spartans defence. The home team responded in the same fashion taking advantage of a Ronaigh Douglas corner which Ronaigh credited to Spartans striker Grace Molloy who managed to get a touch on the corner.

The second started and the weather got progressively worse as the rain turned to sleet and temperatures plummeted, this didn't hamper either side as both teams showed magnificent effort and attitude to continue to provide a fast flowing game, and it didn't take long for Spartans to extend the lead through Sophie Cunningham who grabbed her second of the match.

However De ja vu returned as Boroughmuir replied again in similar fashion as they created a chance which their striker took superbly to close the lead once again. The referee held discussions with both dugouts as he was concerned about the conditions but the girls of both teams were determined to see the game out and again showed magnificent commitment and dedication to fight till the end.
Spartans keeper Eartha Cumings made a brave run to clear danger and was down for a few minutes receiving treatment but returned to her goal to battle on for her team. Spartans stalwart Indyah Heard was magnificent throughout and dominated the middle of the park as Boroughmuir fought for an equaliser, Spartans striker Sophie Cunningham was upended in the box in the final minutes but wasn't given the penalty the players were claiming.

In a game where both sets of coaches praised all the players Spartans held on to win the game 3-2 and manager Rab Aitchison praised the players for a magnificent committed performance and was delighted that the hard work, unity and progress within the team paid off.
