Leith Athletic vs Tweedmouth Juniors - Under 19sIt took until the 90th minute for the winner to be scored in this feisty encounter in the only game which survived the big freeze. Tweedmouth were desperately looking for the win as it was no win in three for the young side, but they knew it wouldn’t easy as Leith have had some great results this season already.

In the opening 10 minutes Leith piled on plenty of pressure and ending up creating several chances but were unable to capitalise. Shortly after, the home side got what they deserved; an early lead. A cross in from the right hand side was met by an onrushing attacker who beat Matty Tait in the air to loop his header over goalkeeper, Robertson.

Tweedmouth battled hard to get themselves back into the game but couldn’t quite get the goal they were looking for. The juniors started to play some attractive passing football but in the end, had no final product. This came back to haunt them as Leith went up and scored their second of the match. Similar to their first, a ball in from the wing was latched onto by Leith’s number 9 who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

Leith Athletic vs Tweedmouth Juniors - Under 19sWhatever was said at the break, certainly stuck in the minds of the Tweedmouth players as they started the second half all guns blazing.

Many of attacks would again come to no avail due to a lack of confidence in front of goal. Luke Dickson went one-on-one on 60 minutes, but a smart save from the opposing goalkeeper denied the skipper.

On 73 minutes, Tweedmouth finally got a goal through Matty Tait. A delightful chipped through ball from Shane Macgregor set up Tait to score a spectacular half volley from the edge of the area. Game on.

Leith went up the other end and should have put the game out of sight, but it was Robertson who pulled off a fine save with his feet and another chance went begging for Leith as a header was the cleared off the line to keep Tweedmouth’s hopes alive.

In the 87th minute, Tweedmouth got the equaliser. A Luke Dickson corner was met perfectly by midfielder Sean Dixon, who powered his header into the top corner to bag his third goal in two games.

Just as the Juniors thought they had done enough to come away with a very good point, Leith got the winner in stoppage time. The ball fell kindly to feet of the attacker after a scramble in the box, and he smashed the ball into the roof to take all three points.

Man of the Match went to newly signed Mark Douglas and a special mention goes out to Ryan Renton. His attitude and application to the game was outstanding and deserves a lot of credit. Even though he only played the last 15 minutes, he had the willingness to win and showed great determination.

Next week, Tweedmouth travel to second division side Craigroyston BC in the Bob Bankier Trophy, a fixture which has been postponed on two occasions.
