Every now and again a game comes along which, as a coach, just makes you smile.

Today was one of those days.

Loanhead are a good team, who at the start of the day were even on points with the Rose girls in second place, so the game was essentially a decider to see who would finish runners up in the league.

The game started with Rose taking the game to the visitors, with some quick re-juggling of the team to account for the clock confusion in Tara's household. Lucy started up front, and was simply superb, torturing the Loanhead defence with twists and turns that are a sheer joy to watch. This is a girl who was born to play football, has worked hard on her game all season, and was instrumental in creating chances that were thwarted by the impressive Loanhead keeper.
Rheanna was clearly in the mood, and came close with a free kick which Anna scooped wide after a save. Ellie also forced the keeper into a great save with a burst of pace finished off with a great drive.

Kirsty came on for Lucy, but that didn't really give the defence any respite as she caused them different problems that they struggled to cope with.

Beth didn't have much to do but was involved more than normal, and pulled off some comfortable saves with immaculate handling. She also communicated superbly with her defenders throughout. Laura and Zoe formed a formidable partnership in the first half at the back. Zoe her usual, ultra calm, ultra composed, ultra effective self, and Laura demonstrating a brilliant natural reading of the game that ensured Loanhead were limited to very few chances. Both girls were strong in the tackle, and composed in setting up runs for the ever eager runs of Ellie and Rheanna.

Still, no goals yet for the Rose, and with 'keeper in sparkling form it looked to be a tough task to make the breakthrough. However, in 20 minutes, from a spring loaded Ellie throw, Lucy shaped her body for a stunning volley on the swivel to crash the opener home.

The Rose were cranking up through the gears, and some of the passing was simply superb. On 27 minutes, a brilliant passing move saw Eliie feed Kirsty on the left, who took two touches before knocking a perfect, pinpoint pass to Tara who made no mistake to slam home – a great move worthy of the end result.

The team talk at half time consisted of "Who wants an extra Jaffa cake" such was the quality of the play.

Half time: LRCFC White 2-0 Loanhead MW

The second half was mostly one way. Anna had a great drive forward, muscling past 2 challenges to set up a great shooting opportunity which ended in a marvellous comedy shot which looked like her legs were being controlled by an evil puppeteer just as she pulled the trigger.

Lucy grabbed her second with a great drop of the shoulder to fool a defender, give her space on the left and finish from a tight angle.

Beth pulled out a splenid diving save to her right to keep her sheet clean, before Rheanna, the world most reluctant striker, grabbed a goal after great pressure and hassle from Laura created the opportunity.

Rheanna demonstrated her own persistence to take her tally to two in 19 minutes, before combining in yet another marvellous passage of passing perfection with Anna to set up the marauding Tara for number six. Rheanna grabbed her own hat-trick in fifteen fantastic minutes in the last minute after a pass from Anna.

To repeat the statement at the top of the report – there are some games that just make you smile. No need to coach the girls during the game – they know what they were doing. Defenders strong, calm and confident. Midfielders powerful, inventive and energetic. Attackers clinical and persistent.

There's not much more you can ask for, and the biggest compliment I can pay them is by repeating the comments from some of the watching parents from the boys game being set up. "Tell you what, these girls can play: Head up, passing, confident on the ball. I wish our boys were like that..."
