Leith Athletic vs Musselburgh Windsor Under 15sLeith Athletic beat Musselburgh Windsor United in stunning fashion to progress into the third round of the South East Region Cup at Leith Links.

Five second half goals from Leith Athletic were enough to ensure they saw off their Division 1 rivals by a score of 7-1. Conal Prior and Euan McGachie both scored two goals.

Musselburgh Windsor United had been in fine form going into the match, and exhibited a smooth, passing game in the early stages but Leith’s constant attacks were too much to handle on the day.

Leith Athletic will play Currie Star in the next round.

The match started with both teams playing passing football in the midfield. It took until the ninth minute for any team to threaten in the attacking third. Prior’s shot from 25 yards flew over the bar.

It was Musselburgh’s turn to shoot from long range three minutes later. Jamie Stewart retrieved the ball from a knock down but his shot was easily caught by Leith goalkeeper Jordan Pettigrew.

A minute later, Windsor full back Dylan Henry’s deep cross nearly caused problems for Pettigrew. The goalkeeper managed to parry the ball away and Stewart was unable to reach the rebound.

The match turned in Leith’s favour on the half hour mark with two quick goals. After a quick counter attack, James Burt drove down the right wing before crossing to Jay McManus. His close range shot was brilliantly saved by Josh Campbell, but Prior was waiting to direct the ball into the net from six yards.

A minute later, McManus crossed to McGachie, who looped his header into the top left corner of the net.

Half Time: Leith Athletic 2-0 Musselburgh Windsor United

Leith Athletic vs Musselburgh Windsor Under 15sWindsor started the second half with aplomb, and scored with their first attack. Stewart lashed the ball into the top right corner from the right side of the penalty area.

The two goal cushion was restored for Leith four minutes later. McGachie surged into the penalty area and was taken down by Sean Ballard. Calum Sandison placed his penalty perfectly into the bottom right of goal.

Another goal was scored in the 52nd minute. A deep free kick on the left wing was directed onto McGachie’s head to score from six yards.

McManus got in on the act in the 60th minute. He dribbled into the right side of the area before hammering his shot across goal into the bottom left corner.

Windsor struggled to get hold of the ball in the second half, but were able to create an opportunity in the 62nd minute. Henry’s shot from the edge of the area was deflected over the bar by a Leith defender.

Prior added Leith’s sixth and his second goal with 15 minutes remaining. The ball fell to him kindly after a corner and he powered the ball into the net from 20 yards.

Nathan Stokes was unable to find a consolation goal for Windsor. He found himself one on one with Pettigrew after Jack Archibald’s long free kick, but the Leith goalkeeper was able to stop his effort.

The match ended with another Leith goal. Lee Thomson shot powerfully into the top left corner from inside the area.

Last weekend we were knocked out of the Scottish Cup because the kids had a bit of a sleepy attitude. Today, we approached the game in the right manner and we were fantastic. I’m really pleased with the reaction especially after last week. This is a big cup for us, against a decent Musselburgh team. We have a good group of players who are doing very well."
