A hat-trick from Kyle Weir helped Shotts 95 to a dominant 7-0 victory over Whitburn in the Final of the Jock Tait Cup.

Shotts powered into a 2 goal lead inside 15 minutes, through a Weir free kick and a Calum Waltho strike, and then stretched their lead to 4 goals by halftime.

Weir completed his hatrick in the second half, and added a fourth, before substitute Keir Mitchell netted a seventh with five minutes to go.

The threat posed by the Shotts attack was demonstrated early on as Waltho’s speculative effort almost caused problems for Whitburn goalkeeper Courtney Gair.

In the eighth minute, Weir broke the deadlock with a delightful curled freekick into the bottom left of the goal, well out of reach for the Whitburn keeper who could do little in the way of saving the net bound effort.

The goalscorer found himself one on one with Gair seconds later but the goalkeeper produced a save to deny Weir.

Calum Waltho drilled a left footed 30 yard strike which rocketed into the bottom corner of the net for 2-0, with 13 minutes on the clock.

Shotts looked very dangerous from set pieces but it was from open play that they grabbed a third.

Jordan McBratney’s header was merely a clearance until it fell to Weir 35 yards from goal. The striker turned and beat two men on his way into the box, before finishing off the move by slotting the ball past Gair.

Whitburn’s solitary chance in the first half came for Christopher Sked who got on the end of Liam Mackay’s cross, but fluffed the shot wide of target.

As half time approached, Shotts won a penalty when Weir was brought down by the goalkeeper. Tayler Jessimar stepped up and converted confidently.

Whitburn, to their credit, made the game more of a contest in the second half, although they didn’t test the keeper often enough.

Shotts’ Wier missed an opportunity to get his hat-trick before he made it 5-0. He raced onto a ball over the top and took it round the keeper to side foot home on the hour mark.

Three minutes later, Weir claimed his fourth goal of the game. Jessimar’s perfectly weighted pass split the defence and found the striker to roll past Gair.

Whitburn’s best chance to score a consolation came from a corner as Jordan Strange swung the ball in for Scott Smith to smash the ball high over the crossbar from 4 yards out.

Shotts rout ended with substitute Keir Mitchell stealing in at the front post to slide the ball in from David Christmas’ cross.
