Kilmarnock were the guests against Hibernian at Oriam and both teams had a chance to win the game and advance higher in the SPFL Development League. Hibs went into the match near the top of the table and Kilmarnock near the bottom, but this can count for little with the ever changing squads made available in this competition.
Although Hibs went 1-0 up and featured players that have made appearances from the first team this could not make up for a Jason Cummings sending off before half time, which gave Kilmarnock the opportunity to turn the game on its head, ending with a 4-1 result in the favour of the away team.
Hibs got off to a shaky start to the match as Kilmarnock striker, Florent Bojaj went past Hibernian keeper Patrick Martin only to have his shot cleared off the line from Hibs centre back Jordan Forster.
Hibs managed to shake this off as just 4 minutes later Jason Cummings intercepted a scrappy pass and ran through on goal, placing it over the keeper to make it 1-0 to the hosts.
Hibernian were dominant for the next 20 minutes until Kilmarnock put a dangerous cross in. Hibs managed to deal with the first ball but the clearance fell to Whittaker who slotted it into the far bottom left corner making it 1-1 with 20 minutes of the half to be played.
The rest of the half saw many chances from Killie but none that could beat Martin. Shortly before the half ended Hibs' Jason Cummings was sent off for abusive comments made to the referee, meaning the second half would be even harder for Hibs.
