Penicuik Athletic Reds became Under 15's Division Three League Cup winners today by overcoming Gala Fairydean Rovers Colts at a sun kissed New Dundas Park.

Both teams had a lot to live up to if they were too match Edina Hibs Under 14s who had stormed to victory on the same pitch just prior. This one was a lot closer, although Penicuik deserved their success.

A first half double from Michael Robertson had them looking good until Sam Cockburn replied with a beautiful goal.

Gala threatened to level towards the end of the first half, but Athletic went on to dominate the second period.

A strike from Jake Grandison rammed home that dominance and secured the win.

Ahletic took the lead after only eight minutes. Cailean Ryan’s corner was headed in by one of the smallest men in the box, Robertson. It was a goal reminiscent of John Robertson, with his name sake showing a predatory instinct in the six-yard box.

Fairydean Rovers had two chances, which sandwiched their second concession. Declan Bell’s volley was straight at Robert Stevenson and Sean Curran’s header from Cairnie’s corner was blocked on its way to goal.

In between those they had fallen further behind. Robertson’s second was supplied by Lewis Allan who burst forward and played it across the box for him.

Bell spurned another good chance when the ball broke to him eight yards out. It has to be said though that he was denied by a super save by Stevenson.

The stopper was eventually beaten in the 19th minute. His kick out was met by Cairnie who returned it with a perfect lob, which sailed over Stevenson’s head.

Gala began to apply a bit of pressure, although they were limited to shots from outside the box.

Cammy Finlayson did manage to get closer in for a strike but Stevenson was equal.

Reds ramped up their play after the break. Captain Grandison led by example and seemed to be everywhere.

He could have had several goals if it wasn’t for the heroics of Kyle Cockburn. The midfielder seemed to be on a mission and relentlessly made runs forward, but the diminutive 'keeper kept out three of his efforts, while two went wide. One, in particular, looked like it was about to nestle in the bottom corner before it was tipped round the post.

But Cockburn is only human and it would have been impossible to keep Grandison out all day. A powerful shot from 20 yards finally beat him in the 59th minute, although he did get a hand to it.

Robertson looked certain to grab his hat-trick when one-on-one but Cockburn, again, somehow found a way to keep it out. It even looked to be past him and only he will know how he got a hand to it.

Zak Galmiche could have made it four after racing on to a long clearance but once again Cockburn made a save.

With time running out for Gala, Cairnie fizzed in a free kick from deep, but nobody was able to get on the end of it.

Kyle Cockburn - Doesn't exactly fill the goals but more than makes up for it with an incredible spring. Made numerous saves when it looked like he was going to be beaten.
Jake Grandison - Absolute colossus in the centre of midfield. Was everywhere and was almost on a one man mission to beat Cockburn in the second half. Was finally rewarded with the goal and the win his work deserved.
Magic Moment

Cockburn's lob from distance was as beautiful as it was critical - it gave Gala a way back into the tie.
Grandison's strike gave them the comfort of a two goal lead when it looked like they might be thwarted in their quest for a third.
