Linlithgow Rose Girls are the latest team to confirm they will be attending the world's largest youth football tournament this summer, the Norway Cup. Rose’s Under-16s team will be going under the YFS banner, along with many other teams in 2016, with announcements still to be made...watch this space!
Doug Johnston, Linlithgow Rose Girls Section Secretary and Under-16s Head Coach, told YFS that the team was delighted to be going to Oslo for the tournament. He said: ‘The team had an exceptional trip when attending the Gothia Cup in summer 2015 and we were very keen to have another similar but different experience.’
Linlithgow successfully applied to YFS for selection as one of a number of Scottish clubs being assisted on the road to Norway. The YFS selection process focuses not based on players’ ability, but on identifying teams with players and coaches who would be excellent positive ambassadors for Scotland on the international stage.
Over 1,600 teams competed annually at the Norway Cup from 52 different countries last year, making it one of the most diverse youth sporting events on the planet. The tournament is so big in the host nation that some matches are even screened live on Norwegian TV.
For Johnston, the Norway Cup’s mind-boggling diversity is – along with the ‘excellent’ facilities – one of its great attractions and strengths. He said: ‘The mixing of so many youth footballers from around the world – the opportunity to compete against and socialise with such a diverse group in a very safe environment is fantastic.’
YFS is providing Scottish teams who register to attend the Norway Cup with bespoke support and advice.
