Whitburn Thistle celebrate final West Lothian league title

Written by

Whitburn Thistle soared to the top of the West Lothian A League, with only one loss the entire season. Club secretary, Anne Gourlay, spoke to Youth Football Scotland to reflect on the success of their season.

"The team have had a very successful first year at 11-a-side," Gourlay said. "Winning the West Lothian A league, only losing one game, and making it a Cup Double by winning the Jim Brady League Cup."

"Unfortunately the Treble wasn’t to be, losing out in the County Cup final but the boys have all enjoyed their first year at competitive football, and have always played with a smile on their faces. All the boys have had such a great season."

Gourlay reflected on some of the difficulties that the team had to overcome. He said: "After losing our only league game back in September, the boys did fantastic to then record two straight away game wins over our league rivals. Having to play each team three times in the league was always going to be hard as someone was going to get two home games out of three."

However she singled out one game as being decisive in their victory of the league: "The game which decided the league was a 1-0 victory in our rivals’ back yard. The boys played a strong game from back to front and our keeper was never troubled."

Yet lessons have been learned throughout the season and that has helped build Whitburn Thistle's success.

"Success is not a God given right. It’s down to hard work, determination, team morale and, most of all, willingness to learn and develop, win or lose," Gourlay said.

A new challenge awaits for Whitburn Thistle who are moving to a new league next season.

"We are moving to the Edinburgh league. It’s been great in West Lothian but we feel the boys will thrive more in a very competitive league,” Gourlay said.

"Hopefully we can enjoy a Scottish Cup run but with so many quality teams out there, that’s always going to be difficult."

Congratulations to Whitburn Thistle under-13 West Lothian A League champions, 2014/15!
