The final stages of the Gothia Cup took place at the weekend with four Scottish clubs in action. Three teams from Tynecastle qualified for the A section, with Currie Star under-14s first XI joining them.
Currie Star under-14s second XI, three teams from Boroughmuir Thistle and Linlithgow Rose 15s all competed in the B section over the weekend. Hazlehead Academy under-14s were knocked out of the A section on Wednesday by AS Mexico.
In Section B, Boroughmuir Thistle 12s were Scotland’s success story and were in the hunt to lift the trophy. After defeating Sweden’s IK Zenith 5-3 on penalties, they met Borgeby FK in the semi-final but the Swedish team were a cut above Boroughmuir on the day and progressed to the final.
The 12s second XI lost to Denmark’s IK Aars in the round of 16 and the 13s were defeated 3-0 by Sweden’s Savedalens IF. Boroughmuir 14s were also knocked out in the round of 16 after a 1-0 defeat to Sweden’s Tyreso FF. They had beaten Landvetter IF 3-2 earlier in the day.
Currie Star had two under-13s team and their under-14s second XI competing. The under-14s progressed to the round of 16 with a 1-0 victory over Georgia’s Vake-WIT. The round of 32 was where the competition ended for both under-13 teams, with the first XI losing 2-1 to Bulgaria’s Marek 2010 and the second XI coming a cropper against Germany’s SuS Kaiserau.
The under-14s battled on in the round of 16, but met tough opposition in the International School of Kenya, and were knocked out after a 4-1 loss.
Linlithgow Rose 15s saw off Sunderby SK 1-0 in the round of 32, but were knocked out by Henans IF after a penalty shootout in the last 16.
