Leith Athletic won the South East Region cup after defeating Musselburgh Windsor in a penalty shootout.

Windsor came from behind twice as the match ended 3-3, but Leith finally triumphed after the teams could not be separated after extra time.

It took just four minutes for Leith to open the scoring. John Robertson took the credit for it in fortunate circumstances. A Windsor clearance ricocheted off Robertson and the ball rolled into the back of the net.

Windsor switched off and conceded another minutes later. A free kick played into the area landed at the feet of Callum Mein and he made sure to lace the ball into the goal from close range.

As the game began to settle down, Windsor started to get into their groove and they almost pulled a goal back midway through the first half. A ball into the area was held up by Chrissy Stevenson before he spun and shot, but the effort was straight at Reece Smail who gratefully caught the ball.

It was Windsor who came out strongest at the start of the second half and pulled a goal back six minutes into the half. A corner delivered from the left side was flicked on by Dan Howie and Wayne Simpson gratefully smashed in a volley at the back post.

They did not let up and levelled the scores 10 minutes later. Steve Kean's corner fell to Stevenson, who nestled the ball into the back of the net.

Leith regained the lead moments later, when Steven Froude's header looped over Laing and bounced into the net.

Musselburgh came back once again. Kean's free kick that flew into the net through traffic to take the match to extra time.

With neither team willing to risk pushing too many bodies forward in extra time, the game headed to penalties with the scores deadlocked.

Both sides scored four of their initial five penalties in the shootout and the tension was cranked up a notch as sudden death penalties began. After both Dan Howie and Sean MacPherson found the net, Mussie’s Shaun Davidson put his penalty just over the bar to give Leith the chance to secure victory.

Simpson stepped up for the boys in black and white and made no mistake to ensure his side would be making the trip back home as South East Region Cup champions.
