Bonnyrigg Rose bounced back from last week's league defeat to Linlithgow Rose with a convincing win against a hard working Spartans Reds side.

Goals from Erin Brigham (2), Natasha Selkirk (5), Megan Johnston, Lori Brownwright (2), Aimee Dilworth, Chloe Ferguson and Nicole Selkirk without reply from Spartans.

Spartans got the game under way and Elif Yildirim set off down the left hand side and put a good cross into the box but Bonnyrigg cleared the danger then it was Spartans' Jodie Barnes who had to show her defensive qualities when she covered good ground to halt Nicole Selkirk's advancement down the left side.

Both teams started with a good tempo to the game but it was the home side who opened the scoring with only three minutes gone. Lori Brownwright picked up the ball and after good work down the left she whipped the ball into the box. The ball found its way to Erin Brigham who saw her initial shot blocked by Spartans' Corrina Hamilton, but she found the back of the net with her second attempt after firing home the rebound.

The visitors had no time to recover from losing the opener when Natasha Selkirk picked up the ball just inside the Spartans' half, drove in on goal and rounded Amy Gracie who had come out to try and close the angle but the Bonnyrigg forward slotted home to put Bonnyrigg two goals to the good with only five minutes played.

It was pretty much all the home side and when Brownwright found Natasha Selkirk on the left with a delightful through ball, she was off again and drove into the near post and from two yards out squeezed the ball between Gracie and the near post to claim her second of the game.

Spartans were working hard but the pace of the Bonnyrigg forward line was causing them real problems every time they got on the ball.

The visitors won the first corner kick of the game on ten minutes which was whipped in by Nica Watt and put out for another corner. Watt sent in a dangerous ball that caused a bit of panic in the Bonnyrigg box who eventually managed to scramble the ball clear. The girls from Ainslie Park then had another opportunity when they were awarded a free kick all of 30 yards out. Kara lynch stepped up but Courtney Mcdonald save easily from her long range effort.

Aimee Dilworth tried to find Natasha Selkirk but Barnes cut out the ball to stop another attack on her goal but the same two players combined again to produce Bonnyriggs fourth goal. Dilworth played a ball from her own half into the path of Selkirk who was offside but as they always say play to the whistle and this is exactly what she did. The ref did not blow for the off side and Natasha Selkirk completed a fifteen minute hat-trick when she finished comfortably leaving Gracie in goal with no chance.

Spartans gifted the home side a goal on twenty minutes when a poor goal kick was latched onto by Dilworth who played the ball into the box and slight hesitation by Gracie in the Spartans' goal allowed Natasha Selkirk to nip in and toe poke the ball beyond her into the net to collect her fourth goal of the game from twelve yards out.

The visitors must have wondered how they found themselves 5-0 down after twenty minutes as they had not played that badly but Bonnyrigg had been so clinical in their finishing when the chances came their way.

The home side created several other chances but good defending firstly from Karolina Kamienska who produced a great tackle to halt Dilworth in her tracks, then Sophie Calder denied Dilworth with a good block after good combination play with Brownwright.

Chloe Feguson came close to getting on the score sheet on 27 minutes for Bonnyrigg when she saw her effort go inches wide of the right hand post after she latched onto a deflection from Brownwrights initial shot. The visitors were relentless and a great ball in from Brownwright on the left flank was cleared over her own bar by Lizzy McElroy for a corner. Dilworth played in the corner from the left and after a scramble the ball fell to Brownwright but she put her shot wide with half a hour played.

Gracie in the visitors' goal showed great concentration to keep her eye on the ball and collect after a long ball from Ruth Gorman found Brigham, who played another high ball into the box.

Spartans should have reduced the deficit minutes from half time when Elif Yildirim had a great chance but she put her shot straight at McDonald from eight yards out after a great run into the box, anywhere else and she was scoring.

The half time interval saw Spartans replace Gracie in goal with Eilidh Turner as is  the norm and we were underway again with Bonnyrigg kicking off.

Turner was called into early action when she had to produce a good stop from Brownwright but she was picking the ball out of the net four minutes into the second half when Megan Johnston fired home finding the left hand corner to make it six from a Dilworth pass.

Like the first half the visitors were not given time to recover from the opening goal of the half when one minute later Gorman played the ball over the top for Brownwright who looked to have gone too soon. The referee gave her the benefit of the doubt and she took full advantage, driving in on goal and producing a composed finish into the far corner for number seven.

Spartans were trying their hardest to get back into the game with Calder working hard down the right side along with Nica watt who was showing good fight in the midfield.

Turner then showed good bravery when she did well to save at the feet of Brownwright to deny what would have been another certain goal. At the other end McDonald nearly let in Yildirim after she came out of the box and miss judged her challenge but the Spartans player just could not get the ball from under her feet to get a shot away.

Spartans came close again when Yildirim showed great skill on the edge of the 18 yard box but her turn and shot went just wide of the post.

Again as in the first half Spartans were not playing that badly but they found themselves conceding again on the 50th minute when Dilworth drove in from the left side and blasted home for number eight and then Dilworth would have scored again minutes later if not for a superb save from Turner to turn the shot round the post.

Spartans again were their own downfall when another poor free kick let the home side in again through Johnstone who put the ball in the box, a few failed clearances saw the ball fall to Brigham who fired across goal to find the far corner to claim number nine for the home side.

Spartans were struggling to get out of their own half and were being forced deeper and deeper by Bonnyriggs wave after wave off attacks.

Natasha Selkirk was nearly increased her own goal tally on 57 minutes when she was inches away from knocking in a Dilworth cross to the back post but she did not have to wait to long for another chance and this time she made no mistake. A square ball played into the box from Johnston was blasted high into the roof of the net by the very talented forward to increase her own tally to five on the 59th minute.

It was all Bonnyrigg as Spartans were camped in and around their box trying to repel the home side's attacks but it was hard work with Gorman firing over the bar, Johnstone shot across goal going just wide and then Dilworth's shot being deflected for a corner. The resulting corner was played in by Natasha Selkirk which was met by Dilworth but her shot went wide.

Natasha Selkirk then became provider when she played in a super ball from the right side to give Ferguson the simplest of tasks to finish with a first time shot from close range on 63 minutes.

A little bit of indecision nearly let Spartans in when Nicole Selkirk had the simplest of tasks to play the ball back to her keeper but instead decided to dribble the ball back to her and when the keeper came for the ball they left it to each other with the Spartans' forward bearing down. Nicole Selkirk decided to take control again and showed good ability as she dribbled out of the danger area up field shouting "I don't know where I'm going" much to everyone's amusement.

Some teams would have taken their foot of the gas but not this Bonnyrigg side. They went on the hunt for more and four minutes from time Brownwright who seemed to have covered every blade of grass fired home from a central position after being tee'd up by Ferguson for her second of the game.

Any question of the goal of the game was nullified when Nicole Selkirk who had been superb at the back for the home side all day picked up the ball in her own box, drove the length of the park evading a good few tackles whilst showing good footwork to retain the ball. The centre back then continued her run into the box but when her initial shot was blocked she reacted quickest to blast home into the far corner to finish off the scoring on the 68th minute mark and produce one of the best individual goals you will see in a long time.

A dominant display by a very good Bonnyrigg Rose side and although many of the Spartan Reds players looked dejected after the final whistle they should be proud of the effort they put in despite the score line there were many positives to be taken from their play.
