West Calder United secure semi-final spot with win over Bathgate

Written by

Fixture: Bathgate Thistle FC v West Calder United U17's
Competition: County Cup
Venue: Armadale
Armadale was the venue for the County Cup quarter final fixture between these two well matched sides. The conditions were tricky with a ferocious wind whipping across the pitch from the off.
Both teams were up for the tie from the start, tackles were flying in and the referee brandished an early yellow card for each side.
West Calder were having the better of the early exchanges and opened the scoring when Aiden cut in from the left hand side, his early shot seemed to take the Bathgate keeper by surprise and the ball nestled in the far corner.
Both teams were trying to get the ball down and play but the conditions meant free flowing football was at a premium. This was developing into a cracking tie as Bathgate tried to get a foothold in the game.  West Calder were pressing hard as the half wore on and had several chances to add to their lead. A mixture of some great keeping and a couple of penalty decisions going against them meant that United were unable to add to the score. The half drew to a close with the visitors in the ascendancy.
Half Time: Bathgate Thistle 0-1 West Calder United
The second half started with bright sunshine replacing the hail. Bathgate upped the tempo as the battle in midfield intensified. West Calder were standing strong though and doubled their lead when Jake went into a thunderous tackle which sent the ball fizzing into the bottom corner.
The setback took the wind out of the Bathgate sails briefly but they were right back in it when a rare lapse in concentration by United lead to a Bathgate goal.
West Calder soon picked up the pace however and restored their two goal cushion. Reece made the most of some poor defending to power his header past the Bathgate Keeper who had no chance.
The tie was far from over though as Bathgate once again breeched the United defence, ten minutes remained for West Calder to hold on. Every one of the West Calder lads dug in right to the end and held on to secure a semi-final spot.
This was a highly entertaining cup tie and both teams should be congratulated on the quality of their play in some really testing conditions.
