Leith Athletic convincingly beat Spartans Reds 7-0 when they met in the preliminary round of the League Cup at a wet and windy Leith Links on a heavy pitch.

A team is never a one player team but Jodie Glen was very nearly the exception to the rule when she claimed six out of the seven goals that Leith scored with Alexandra Baird chipping in with the other.

Both teams came into the match facing their first competitive game of the season but also in Leiths case this was only their second game ever.

Spartans had no time to settle when Jodie Glen showed her intent in the opening minute when she drove into the box and blasted over the bar from 10 yards out. A minute later she opened the scoring when again she picked up the ball and drove from midfield into the box, but this time she made no mistake and slotted the ball past Amy Gracie in the visitors goal.

Glen was on her bike again but Gracie in the Spartans goal was brave to smother the ball at the midfielders feet and then Kara Lynch showed her defensive qualities minutes later when she halted Alexandra Baird's advancement towards goal.

Spartans Cara Raven Ademis went on a good run down the right hand side of the box but her touch was just a little heavy and Jade Meldrum in the home goal collected. A free kick on the right side of the box provided Spartans with another opportunity, the ball was played in by Kara Lynch which was blocked but Nica Watt was on hand for the rebound but she shot wide of the near post.

Baird took off on a run half the length of the park for the home side to bear down on the Spartans goal but Gracie again did well to come out and clear the danger. Lizzie McElroy minutes later showed a great turn of pace for the visitors to get down the left side and clear the ball for a throw in to Leith.

Glen had the ball in the visitors goal again on 15 minutes but the referee deemed she had gone to soon when she got on the end of Sharleen McEwans 20 yard free kick.

Spartans were given a great chance to put the Leith goal under pressure when they were awarded an indirect free kick eight yards out. Lynch tapped the ball sideways to Watt who struck a fierce shot but Susan Tricia Dodds blocked the shot although she never looked 10 yards back from where the kick was taken.

Just when Spartans looked to have weathered the Leith storm, Glen broke from midfield and powered her way into the right side of the box and slotted home from eight yards out to get her and the home sides second on 21 minutes.

A minutes later and Spartans found themselves further behind when Glen again picked up the ball straight from the restart and strolled through the visitors defence to slot the ball under Gracies body to claim her hat-trick.

Leith won a corner when Stephanie Smiles shot deflected of Watt. The resulting corner was whipped in by Smile's across the face of the visitors goal but their were no takers for Leith. Spartans were having to do a bit of defending and Corinna O'Malley Hamilton was doing that time and time again trying to halt the Leith charge.

Defending was the name of the game again for Spartans when Glen who was a threat every time she came forward took the ball for another run. Gracie did well to stand up and saved Glen's initial shot but the midfielder picked up the loose ball, but just as Glen looked like she would add to her tally, Sophia Calder produced a great goal saving clearance.

Kia Howat then won a stonewall penalty for Leith when she was brought down in the box. After a stoppage for the referee, who else but Glen stepped up and blasted the spot kick into the right hand corner on the 35th minute mark.

Spartans nearly finished the half on a high when Watt found Zoe Hume four yards out who had worked hard all game. Hume hit the shot well but Meldrum stood up well, made herself big and made the save to bring the first half to a end.

Spartans got the second half under way after the interval with the introduction of Eildh Turner in goal replacing Amy Gracie. Unfortunately the first thing Turner had to do was pick the ball out of the net after Baird picked up the ball, rounded the Spartans defender and produced a composed finish across the keeper into the far corner a minute into the half.

The visitors could have thrown in the towel but that was not the case and they started get their passing game going and this produced some nice combination play down Leiths left hand side.

The home side were awarded a free kick 20 yards out after Baird was brought down. Hamilton stepped up but her free kick went wide of the right hand post and out for a goal kick. Leiths next attack produced another goal for Glen when she drove into the box on the left and prodded the ball home between Turner and her near post from close range to make it six on the 43rd minute.

Spartans may have thought Leith might take their foot of the pedal but this was not to be the case when three minutes later Glen was at it again when she drove through on goal and through the Spartans defence to poke home from a yard out to claim her sixth goal of the game.

A good move nearly produced a goal for the visitors when Keanna Mair found Hume in the box with Meldrum rushing out at her she poked the ball under the keepers body. The ball rolled and rolled closer and closer to the goal line but agonizingly for Hume it somehow went just past the right hand post for a corner as the last touch was of the keeper.

The resulting corner from the right was played in by Calder and Smile's put it out for another corner but the following corner went straight out. Spartans were doing well and looked positive despite the score line and Mair showed good skill to drive to the by-line and headed towards goal but Meldrum collected at the near post.

Spartans started to have the best spell off the game for them and pushed forward. Watt showed some nice footwork in the opposition box before she was crowded out. Mair then was involved with the visitors next move when she whipped in a good ball from the right but Smile's cleared the danger.

Hume was next to try her luck but her shot was blocked then Hume was found by team mate Bella Boynton but her shot looped into the air and was taken comfortably by Meldrum. Hume then produced a great chance when she played in a cracking ball across the face of the Leith goal and if Boynton had just been a yard further forward in the box she would of had a tap in on 55 minutes.

The home side were awarded a free kick on the right and Smiles took responsibility but just over hit the ball and it went long and out for a goal kick.

Spartans were back on the attack and Hume found Calder on the right side but her quality ball in was claimed by Meldrum in the home goal. Calder then thought she would try her luck from range but again Meldrum claimed.

Spartans were having a good spell but the home side reminded them that they were still there when McEwan shot wide of the right hand post.

Turner's afternoon in the visitors goal was not finished and she produced two great saves to keep the score line down. Firstly Howat found herself bearing down on goal but Turner done brilliantly to turn the ball behind from close range with a fine one handed save. The resulting corner was played straight into the side netting.

Turner's second great save came from goal machine Glen when she drove in from the left side of the box and got her shot away six yards out but again Turner done superbly to turn the ball behind with two hand this time. The corner was played in by Smiles to Glen who tried to play Smile's back in but the ball was cleared.

Both teams showed great determination and that was the way it was as the referee brought this game to an end. Leith Athletic and Spartans Reds gave everything today and both set of players contributed to a good game of football but in the end Leith were just that bit to strong for their Spartans counter parts on the day.

Jodie Glen - Scored six goals out of her teams seven and could have had more. A powerful forward who used her strength and pace to slice through the opposition's defence like a hot knife through butter.
Bella Scauy - Worked hard all day at the back and made numerous good tackles and interventions to stop Leith increasing their goal tally. A player who could read the game really well which is a great attribute to have as a footballer especially in defence.
