Bonnyrigg advance at the expense of Edinburgh South

Written by  Bonnyrigg Rose Colts

Fixture: Edinburgh South v Bonnyrigg Rose Colts
Competition: Under 13's Ken Ritchie Cup
Date: 22/02/15

On a bitterly cold morning Edinburgh South started this Ken Ritchie Cup Tie at a great tempo and pressed Bonnyrigg Rose Colts straight from the start.

Edinburgh South's early pressure was rewarded and they earned themselves a corner, however Bonnyrigg defended this well and quickly turned defence into attack with some neat play down the right wing ending with Nicolaus Reitvelt having a great shot saved by Ben Gormley in the Edinburgh South goal. This fantastic save from Ben Gormley was to be his first of many in the game.

Both teams were battling hard to get the upper hand in this tie whilst also trying to play some nice football on a very difficult surface.

Another good Bonnyrigg move down the right wing left Jack Solway 1v1 with only Ben Gormley to beat but once again Gormley saved at Solway's feet.

Edinburgh South continued to work hard in midfield with Yuan Fang and Bruno Steel and the lively Ciaran Vaughan trying to cause Bonnyrigg problems at every opportunity. This paid dividends as Yuan Fang tried to test Ryan Kay in the Bonnyrigg goal with a long range effort but his shot went just over the bar.

On 15 minutes and some nice skills down the right wing by Arran Laidlaw resulted in a scramble in the Edinburgh South penalty area and the ball fell to Calum Glen who saw his effort turned round the post by Gormley.

However from the resulting corner some neat passing between Bobby Wilson and Ryan Hodge caught Edinburgh South unaware and this time when the ball once again fell at the feet of Calum Glen in the box he left Gormley no chance as he slammed his shot into the roof of the net.

Edinburgh South continued to work hard to get on level terms and nearly done so as a short pass back from Josh Winnik left Tom Gill bearing down on the Bonnyrigg goal but Ryan Kay reacted quickly to clear his lines.

With the game still finely balanced the next goal was always going to prove vital and on the 25th minute Bobby Wilson delivered a fantastic corner which was met by the very impressive Jacob Donaldson who controlled it superbly before firing home and giving Bonnyrigg a 2 goal lead to take into the half-time break.

Half Time : Edinburgh South 0-2 Bonnyrigg Rose Colts

Edinburgh South came out fighting straight from the start and earned themselves a corner to put Bonnyrigg under pressure. Once again Bonnyrigg defended the corner well and quickly broke upfield with Jack Solway finding himself 1v1 against Ben Gormley but once again the Edinburgh South stopper came out on top in this personal battle.  Today just wasn't going to be Jack Solway's day as after some neat footwork inside the box by Linden Koya he teed up Solway who's goal-bound effort was brilliantly cleared off the line by Bruno Steel to keep Edinburgh South in this game.

Bonnyrigg were now starting to get the upper hand in this cup tie but were finding it difficult to beat the magnificent Gormley as he pulled off a string of saves from long range as Bonnyrigg tried desperately to find another goal.

Despite all the Bonnyrigg pressure Edinburgh South were still in this tie as Yuan Fang and Bruno Steel continued to work tirelessly in the middle of the park but had a tough task trying to contain the industrious Jacob Donaldson.

It was always going to take something special to beat Ben Gormley and with 10 minutes remaining Linden Koya provided exactly this. After some neat passing in midfield by Bonnyrigg Koya received the ball 20 yards from goal and fired an unstoppable shot rattling the underside of the crossbar and crossing the goal line before bouncing back into play. A correct referee call deciding the ball had indeed crossed the line and the goal was given to finally give Bonnyrigg the breathing space their constant  pressure deserved and inevitably putting themselves  into the next round of the cup.

Overall this was a tough cup tie played in great spirit by both teams in difficult conditions and Bonnyrigg thoroughly deserved their victory for sticking to their task despite being denied by the heroic Ben Gormley in the Edinburgh South goal who tried so hard to keep the Bonnyrigg forwards at bay.

Full Time : Edinburgh South 0-3 Bonyrigg Rose Colts

STAR MAN Edinburgh South :

Despite great performances from Yuan Fang and Bruno Steel in the Edin South midfield there was one man that was a class act above everyone else on the Pitch.
Ben Gormley in goal you were a hero in goal today young man.

STAR MAN Bonnyrigg Rose Colts :

Lewis Walker at left back was impressive but the very industrious Bonnyrigg Captain Jacob Donaldson led his team by example in the middle of the park and takes the honours for his team.
