A single goal from Aiden MacKenzie was enough to claim the points for Edina Hibs in this hard fought encounter against a hard working Spartans side.

Most of the play was restricted to the midfield with both sides fighting for supremacy in that area of the park in the opening stages.

The first half chances of the match fell to the visitors when Dean Burgess drove into the box from the left side but his shot was blocked then Nicholas Aitchison was next to try and create something but his ball into the box was claimed by Ben Ritchie in the Spartans goal.

The home side started to push forward and Steven King was halted by some strong but fair tackling and then Burgess showed a good touch and control but again Edina stood strong to deny him a shot on target when Seamus Russell produced a well timed tackle.

Spartans then showed their defending ability when after a good run down the left Burgess again found his advance halted by Owen Barnes this time.

Edina created a half chance when Jordan Keegan saw his drive deflected of team mate Liam Edmoston but Russell put the follow up wide of the left hand post.

The Ainslie Park men came close to opening the scoring on 14 minutes after Rory Campbell played the ball into Balde who was unfortunate to see his well struck shot from 16 yards out come back of the post.

Ritchie was then tested by Edina's Burgess but the keeper saved comfortably and then a nice one and two passage of play down the left side involving several Edina players ended in the final shot being blocked by Ritchie.

Both teams were working hard and showing great competitiveness in the game and it was the home side who went on the attack this time with Matteo Crolla playing in a lovely through ball for Archie Morris but he just could not bring the ball under control and it rolled out harmlessly for a goal kick.

Spartans were starting to win more of the second balls in the midfield and this led the visitors giving away a free kick 30 yards out which was played in by Crolla but when Balde got on the end of it he was adjudged off side.

Spartans were creating a lot but the final ball in the last third was letting them down at times and allowing their opposition to clear the danger.

Twenty five minutes in and the visitors had not forced Ritchie in the home goal into any noticeable saves partly due to Spartans defending well and getting numbers behind the ball restricting Edina to long range efforts.

Edina came close when Edmonston headed the ball on for Russell but his effort from 20 yards went wide off the upright then at the other end Campbell picked up the ball in midfield and drove towards the visitors goal but his shot from 25 yards out did not trouble Thomas McLean between the sticks for Edina.

The team from the East of the city should have opened the scoring five minutes to half time when Aiden MacKenzie found himself one on one with Ritchie but the keeper done well to make himself big and saved well with his feet.

The visitors turned up the pressure and Burgess was halted in his tracks after Kris Graff produced a great tackle and then Graff was on hand again to block Aiden MacKenzie's goal bound shot.

Spartans nearly snatched the lead in the last minute of the half when the busy Balde produced a ferocious strike from 25 yards which McLean brilliantly turned around the right hand post for a corner with the resulting corner from the right going straight behind from the kick.

Edina got the game restarted after the interval and both teams showed good defending to clear early second half danger.

A corner from the right for the home side nearly produced a goal after the ball whipped in by Crolla came off Hector Gray's leg and wide of the upright.

Burgess who had been a danger all the first half every time he got on the ball was at it again down the left but was abruptly halted by Luke Cormack leading to a free kick for the visitors.

The ball played in from the left touch line was met by Alassan Jones but Ritchie produced a top quality save to tip the ball over the bar for a corner to keep the score line at 0-0.

Edina looked the better side in the second half so far and were playing some nice football going forward but Spartans were standing strong at the back and repelling their threat.

Spartans looked to have caught Edina out when Balde played through Cormack who looked like he had timed his run perfectly but was adjudged to have went to soon and was deemed off side by the man in the middle.

Aiden MacKenzie tested Ritchie in the home goal but his shot from 18 yards was taken easily by the Spartans stopper then Ritchie had to react quickly minutes later when Dean Coyle played a through ball to Edmonston but the Spartans keeper was quick off his line to scoop up the ball.

Sadly Ritchie who had proved so difficult to beat could do nothing on the 52nd minute when after good play down the left saw Burgess play the ball across the box which was completely missed by Jones in the centre of the box which allowed the ball to carry all the way through to Aiden MacKenzie.

MacKenzie made no mistake at the far post and knocked the ball home from close range to give the visitors the lead.

Spartans did not let their heads drop and continued to play their football which forced several corners. Crolla played in the first corner from the right side which was put out by McLean for another corner, Crolla again whipped in the corner which Balde headed up in the air then got another header on it to force a mad scramble at the far post which saw the ball pop out to Balde but McLean saved his shot.

The home side were not finished there and forced the play and won another corner kick on the left this time. Crolla whipped the ball in at the near post which was cleared as far as Ross McGrail who drove into the box but McLean done well to save at the Spartans mans feet.

A good spell for Spartans which saw Luke McMahon hit a great strike which saw the ball deflected off the Edina player and spin up into the air which McLean had to watch carefully as he came out to claim.

The visitors were coming back into the game after a spell off pressure from the home side and came close to increasing their lead when Aiden MacKenzie played a ball in from the left but his team mate just could not force the ball home from four yards out with his acrobatic attempt.

The men from the Jewel were pushing forward and were awarded a free kick which resulted in the ball being played just too long for Lewis Sives who had made a good run down the right.

Ritchie who had produced good saves through out the game when needed came to Spartans rescue again when on the 68th minute he made himself big to save from Edmonston from six yards out to keep any chance of a come back alive.

With minutes remaining Spartans went looking for the equalizer but this is risky as you are always leave yourself susceptible to the counter attack and this was nearly the case when Jones broke up field and found Burgess who whipped a ball into the box which Sives met but his shot was blocked and after a bit of panic Spartans got players back and eventually managed to get the ball clear.

Into added on time and McMahon had the last kick of the game when he hooked a ball into the box from 20 yards out but McLean came and claimed the ball.

A cracking game of football with two teams who worked hard and played good football and it was a shame a team had to loose as they both gave so much.

John Balde - Showed great appetite for the game and worked extremely hard down the left and caused problems for the opposition with his direct running and enthusiasm.
Dean Burgess - Set up the goal, worked hard down the left hand side all game and looked to create and get the ball into the box quickly. Strong in the tackle and worked back well to support his defence when required.
