Under 13's SERYFL Division 3
25 January 2015
Both sets of players seemed to be up for the fight as ref Calum Dyson blew his whistle to start this reverse fixture. This wet the appetite of all the onlookers, hoping of a similar entertaining game as the earlier season fixture had been, which Athletic narrowly ran out 3-5 winners.
The game started evenly with both teams testing their opposite defences and keeper's reactions, in a series of forays into each other’s halves but to the credit of both teams, they kept each other at bay keeping the scoreline at 0-0.
Most of Athletic's best moves seemed to be coming down both the left and right flanks through Stevenson & Brown and eventually from one of these passages of play, lead to Athletic's first goal.
A sweeping move down the left, lead to the ball being floated into the box, in the direction of Byrne, who controlled the ball and struck it low passed the keeper into the net.
Straight from this forced restart, Haddington pushed the ball left, eventually ending up at the feet of their left winger, who raced down the left hand side into the box and fired the ball goal-wards. The well struck  ball wriggled under the Athletic keeper and ended up nestled in the net.
The remainder of the half, both teams stood firm at anything that came up against them, although both teams had their keeper to thank on the very odd occasion that their defences were breached. Haddington for an unbelievable save from a dipping shot from McGrogan and Athletic for a defence error leading to the Goalie clearing the ball far up the park and way from danger.
Half Time : Musselburgh Athletic Whites 1-1 Haddington Athletic
At the start of the second half, Haddington took the upper hand and came close on a number of occasions and really should have taken the lead, if it wasn't for a few misplace shots and the stubbornness of Athletics's defence and goalie.
To add to the agony of the early chances Haddington had missed, Athletic started to force themselves back in the tie and with one of the first efforts of the half, Byrne peeled off his marker at the back of the Haddington 18 yard box and blasted the ball home at the second attempt.
Shortly after Athletic scored their third goal of the tie with again Byrne finishing of the move by lifting the ball high over the out coming keeper into Haddington's net.
To the credit of Haddington, they dug in deep and no more so than their captain, who lead by example,  by winning the ball in his own half, raced down the field beating a few of the Athletic players and thundering a shoot that went just wide of the post.
Haddington took heart from their captain's attitude and from a sustained amount of pressure  they  found their route to goal once again, from a free-kick from just outside the Athletic box.
From there on in, both sides craved out a few chances at either end but both defences held out until the final whistle.
