Formartine Youth Under 16’s came out on top against Ellon Meadows at Newburgh on Saturday. Formartine showed they meant business right from the start with good attacking football and within thirty minutes, Matthew Tewnion had scored a hat-trick!
Game over? Ellon Meadows had other ideas and pulled one back with 10 minutes of the half remaining. Ellon kept the pressure on and with a couple of minutes left a clearance from the Ellon half was misjudged by the Formartine keeper and ended up in the back of the net. 3-2 and game on.
Half Time: Ellon Meadows 2-3 Formartine Youth
The second half was a more even contest with both teams playing good football and
creating chances. Formartine went 4-2 up after 60 minutes direct from a corner which was deflected past the Keeper off one of the Ellon defenders. Both teams continued to create chances in what was an entertaining derby game with Formartine finishing the stronger of the two teams.

North Star Phoenix threatened first in the 4th minute when Jordan Baillie went close with a looping effort before David Vaughan’s close range drive brought a good save from Finn Ross. Two minutes later Nathan Sangster rounded the keeper for Kemnay but found the angle was too tight so had to bring the ball back inside. By this time the keeper was back in position and pulled off a fine save.
Kemnay broke the deadlock 14 minutes. Liam Clark beat the offside trap and had all the time in the world to coolly slot home past the keeper. The home side responded well and Baillie was unlucky to see his shot saved at the near post after getting away from a couple of defenders in the box.
The equaliser did come in the 21st minute though, and it was Cole Morrison with an assured finish from inside the box. Just as Phoenix responded well to Kemnay’s goal, so Kemnay reacted to the equaliser. Liam Clark’s low drive from just outside the area forced Brandon Rosendale into a decent stop.
The game was raging from end to end and Vaughan saw his powerful shot on the turn tipped over the bar by Ross on 25 minutes. The same player went close again a couple of minutes later with a central free kick on the edge of the box, but once again he was denied by the goalkeeper.
In the final action of the half Finn Ross pulled off yet another great save from a free kick, this time from Baillie, before Vaughan fired the rebound wide.
On 38 minutes Jack Leadbetter had a go at doubling Phoenix’s lead, but he couldn’t beat Ross from the ‘D’. Kemnay then went on the attack with Sangster charging away down the right and breaking into the box. Just as he was about to pull the trigger though Lewis Willox intervened with a fantastic last ditch challenge.
Kemnay kept coming though and did manage to level things just two minutes later. Kevin Low went on a good run down the left and found Aiden Sheridan in the middle. Sheridan took a touch to control before feigning to shoot one way and, as the keeper dived, rolling the ball the other way into the net.
The scores were not level for long though as the home side retook the lead within three minutes. Cole Morrison completed his hat trick with some textbook striking play, lurking in the box, waiting for his chance and when it came, smashing the ball home, leaving the keeper with no chance.
North Star were playing some really classy football and a great one-touch passing move in the 50th minute sliced through the Kemnay defence and almost led to a goal. Vaughan’s powerful strike was expertly saved by the impressive Finn Ross.
On 56 minutes Sangster broke through the Phoenix defence and into the box, he hit his shot with real venom but Rosendale managed to tip it over the crossbar. David Vaughan was doing everything he could to get on the score sheet but his shot on the turn from 25 yards was saved once again by Ross.
North Star Phoenix had been defending magnificently but Kemnay were not going to give up. Five minutes from time the visitors got their reward. A really dangerous ball across the face of goal was met Nathan Sangster whose effort looped up over the keeper and then dipped underneath the cross bar to level things up at 3-3.
Neither team were content to sit back and settle for a draw, but neither were able to create any real chances to win it in the final few minutes. All in all a draw was probably the fair result although Kemnay will be happier than Phoenix with their point due to the late equaliser. It was a really entertaining, end-to-end game with good quality football being played.

Cove BC enjoyed 18 degree heat at Portlethen Academy on Sunday as they beat Newmachar United 5-2 to progress to the second round of the Scottish Youth FA Cup where they will meet Albion BC.
The opening 20 minutes of the match were very even with both teams scoring early on. Cove's Sean Davidson scored within a minute but that was quickly cancelled out by Newmachar's Sam Garnham. From then on Cove took control and that was emphasised with four goals as Mark Somers and Adam Whiffin both scored twice either side of half time. Despite Cove's superiorty, Newmachar never gave up and they got their reward just before full time through Alex Durrand's cool penalty.
Cove BC and Newmachar United had met several times before in seven-a-side matches but this was their first meeting playing with 11 players each.
Cove were quickest off the mark and took the lead after a minute. Striker Davidson lacthed on to a loose ball and shrugged off a couple of challenges before prodding the ball into the net from 10 yards.
Newmachar's players reacted brilliantly to that early setback and equalised only two minutes later. Danny Milnes' dangerous free kick evaded everyone apart from his teammate Garnham who nudged the ball home from a couple of yards.
The wait for the next goal of the game wasn't a long one with Cove retaking the lead after seven minutes. A throw-in on the right wing saw Davidson lay the ball off for Somers whose cross/shot flew into the far left top corner of the goal.
As the game started to settle down Cove were the team in the ascendancy. The majority of the game was being played in Newmachar's half with they away side relying on their pacy strikers to cause problems on the counter attack.
Cove then hit the crossbar after 16 minutes when Jordan Kidney's volley was punched on to the woodwork by Newmachar goalkeeper Jack Ross.
Newmachar's defender Craig Hume then had to produce a great piece of defending to keep the score at 2-1. Cove's Somers went past the goalkeeper and looked destined to score until Hume intervened to thwart him.
After some Cove pressure Newmachar had stabilized and began to get their foot on the ball and think about attacking themselves. That was until the 32nd minute when Cove did score their third. Kieran Stewart's initial shot was blocked by the feet of goalkeeper Ross but the ball looped up for Somers who headed past Ross from six yards.
Just before half time Somers nearly completed his hat trick. Stewart's sweeping cross found Somers but his shot went marginally wide of goal.
Newmachar came close to halving the deficit shortly after the interval. Ryan Ritchie was rewarded for chasing what looked like a lost cause but his shot was well saved by goalkeeper Daniel Green.
Cove then put the game out of sight with two quickfire, and very similar, goals. Stewart's superb corner was nodded into an empty net by defender Whiffin after 57 minutes.
A minute later the same combination made it 5-1 to the hosts. Stewart's corner from the same side again found an unmarked Whiffin who this time headed home from the penalty spot.
By this point Cove were fully in control but Newmachar were still looking dangerous on the counter attack. They nearly scored from one of those counters when Shae Gallachar fed Milnes who cut inside a defender and shot from within the penalty area but it was well held by Green in goal.
Newmachar did score again a few minutes before the final whistle. A great run from Shaun Sangster on the left wing was completed with an equally great cross which found Garnham in the box who was bundled over by Cove 'keeper Green. A penalty was awarded and Durrand side-footed the ball to the left of the 'keeper and into the net.
There was just enough time for one more Cove chance but Davidson's close range shot just missed the bottom corner and went harmlessly wide for a goal kick.
Cove manager Craig Philip had said before the match that he expected a very close game. Football wise, both teams were quite evenly matched. What swung it in Cove's favour was the power they had in their team and they probably just wanted it that little bit more on the day.

Cove's striker Sean Davidson started the match brilliantly but he was forced off after 13 minutes holding his hamstring. He did reappaer for the second half but didn't have the same impact. So it would have to be Kieran Stewart. Stewart went about his business quietly but was influential in the final third. The midfielder was directly involved in three of his team's goals and looked comfortable on both feet.

Newmachar's captain Euan Wylie was their outstanding performer. Despite Cove having a number of bigger players, Wylie wasn't afraid to throw his body at any tackle or any block and he made a number of timely tackles and interceptions. He also tried to organise his team throughout the match. These qualities would have been the reason he is their captain.

The first league game of the season at under 19s started at a cloudy looking Inverurie and it was a really competitive game for the curtain raiser however both sides had to gain a point out of the game in a contest which included Colony having a penalty saved in the 28th minute.
Locos had the 1st opportunity of the game after a great ball was sprung into the box by Kieran Lawrence which was met by Dean Henderson however Hendersons 15 yard drive just went inches wide of the left hand post.
In what was a quiet start to the game which contained very limited chances, Locos got a penalty after 26 minutes after Kieran Lawrence was brought down in the box by Louis Smith, Alex Duguid took the penalty who slammed it down the middle however Stuart Miller was active to the spot-kick to turn it away.
This seemed to kick on Cove a little bit and they had a couple of chances to get the breakthrough, 1st through AJ Baker after a great ball was sent in from Callum Bayfield then a 15 yard drive from Sean Duthie was turned over the bar from Cammy Garden after a free kick came in from Louis Smith. After that Garden did well to hold onto an Aaron Cox effort from 15 yards.
If you exclude the penalty out of the proceedings then the golden chance of the half fell to Colonys Dean Henderson who tried a spectacular 40 yard drive towards goal which crashed off the crossbar with some debate going on as to wether the goal should have been given or not.
Half Time: Colony Locos 0-0 Cove Rangers
Alex Duguid tried to make up for his penalty miss at the start of the 2nd half after he met a decent ball in from the left hand flank by Kieran Lawrence and Duguid had a 10 yard effort towards goal gathered up by Miller in the Cove goal.
Colony piled on the pressure to the Cove backline and they were away to deal with another dangerous ball coming into the box after Lukas Kennedy went on a storming run and his ball from the right hand flank found Grant Dawson whos header just sailed over the bar.
Cove were then to take control of the game after the 65th minute and it saw them have an effort from Callum Porteous saved by Cammy Garden after some great work in the lead up to the effort by Rangers.
Callum Bayfield was then to have an attempt to try and get past the Colony defence and get the opener after he recieved the ball from Callum Shinnie and then broke past a Colony defender before having his effort saved by Garden.
As both teams were in the search for a winner, it got a bit too much for one player in particular, as a long ball didn't reach any of the Cove forwards and was gathered up by Garden in the Locos goal, Cove forward Aaron Cox aimed a kick at Phillip Woodgreaves and Cox could count himself very lucky that he only got a yellow card.

The Aberdeenshire League campaign got underway last night, and Youth Football Scotland will this season be bringing back a full round-up of the U20s action every week.
Inverurie Locos got their season off to a great start with a fine 6-0 win over Huntly, with three goals in each half. Andy Hunter opened after nine minutes. Winger Mitchell Reid scored two fine goals before the break and it could have been more but for some goal line clearances by the visitors.
As the night grew even colder, Reid completed his hat trick with another right foot strike. Late on up popped Ryan Broadhurst to first time volley home a corner then an absolute peach of a dipping drive from fellow sub Jordan Bisset in the final minute.
Formartine United and Fraserburgh shared a 3-3 draw. Callum Dunbar scored twice for the home side, along with Alex Duguid. Meanwhile the Broch scorers were Mark Cowie, Adam Clark and Zander Davidson.
Cove Rangers drew by the same scoreline at Allan Park. Jordan Leyden, Anthony Harkin and Michael Gunn scored for the hosts, with Graeme Watt (penalty), Paul Sutherland and an own goal from Felipe Da Silva's ball ensuring a 3-3 draw.
Keith's drew 1-1 against Buckie Thistle, with Josh Cruickshank scoring for the Maroons and Calum Wilson for the Jags.
Meanwhile, Banks O'Dee were 3-2 winners over Turriff United, with James Chalmers on target twice for United. Chris Liversedge, Liam McCall and Lukasz Jarosiewick netted for the hosts.

There are three ties involving Highland League sides, with all-SHFL ties at Allan Park and Grant Park, while SPFL side Ross County host Clachnacuddin. Formartine United have a bye into round three.

At Garioch Sports Centre, a windy morning had an added ingredient as by the time half time arrived it was quite dreich as well and it was to be quite heavy from the time Westdyke scored their goal until the 50th minute in what was a twenty minute spell.
It didn't affect the football on the 3G surface and after scores were level at half time, Colony managed to get three late goals to ensure their place in the next round of the competition where they will play last seasons Scottish Cup finalists Albion BC after they saw off Banchory 11-1.
Colony had the 1st chance of the game after Cameron Watt played a short pass into Jordan Cooper who then tried a 18 yard drive towards goal which was saved by Scott Brooks in the Westdyke goal. Park started the first opening of the game well and took their lead well in the 10th minute after Finlay Watson sent a good acute ball into the feet of Watt who tapped the ball into an empty with the away defence exposed.
This could possibly be described as a wake up call for Westdyke and started to get forward after the restart and a great through ball from Jamie Black went through the home defence and found its way into Ross Peddie who paced his way towards goal however unfortunately for the forward he did too much and Calum Wilson was able to intercept the danger.
Chances were few and far between in the 1st half however Colony could have doubled their lead on the half hour mark after a short pass from Thomas Riach found Watson however his 10 yard effort just went inches wide of the left hand post.
Westdyke were to grab a leveller before half time after a great corner came in by Cameron Jaffrey which was met by Jamie Black whose header found the bottom left hand corner, a great time for the visitors to grab a goal as just shortly afterwards the referee blew for the interval.
Half Time: Colony Park 1-1 Westdyke BC
Colony had an opportunity to re-take the lead in the 47th minute after Riach ran clean through of the Westdyke defence after a through ball from Jordan Cooper however his close range effort was wonderfully saved by Brooks in the visitors goal. Brooks was called into action again a short time later after he produced another good save to deny Ross Craigen after a long ball was sent into the feet of the player. Colony were to get the rub of the green that they were looking for soon.
Westdyke were to try and get a goal though to give them the lead for the 1st time in the game and nearly got one after a through ball found its way into forward Ross Peddie however his 15 yard effort just went inches wide of the left hand post.
The home side were to take the lead again in the 68th minute after a great ball from the left hand side was sent in by Jordan Cooper which was met by Ross Craigen who managed to volley it home to put park in the drivers seat. Just shortly after Cameron Watt was trying to add to the Colonys tally and his goalscoring tally however his 20 yard effort which was goalbound was tipped over the bar by Scott Brooks.
Park then doubled their advantage after a through ball from Watt which found Ross Craigen who gave Brooks no chance with his effort finding the top left hand corner with his 14 yard effort. Colony made sure of their place in the next round thanks to a great ball being sent in by Cameron Smith which found defender Bryce Dawson who nodded it home to complete a good day at the office for the hosts.

This Sunday, a wildly windy and wet morning was the setting for a closely fought first round cup match between home side ALC Athletic and visitors Deveronvale. With the home side in their red kit, and the visitors in white, it could be seen from kick-off that both teams were keen to make a quick start.
Barclay Forsyth started brightly with a darting run at Athletics defence, only for Frankie Stewart to come and close down any chance of a fruitful attack. The ball then bounced around the midfield before slipping through to Athletics' Lewis Ifi who was denied well by Deveronvale goalkeeper Arran Golias, the beginning of a fine game for the young keeper.
Excellent play on the right wing by Athletics' Ethan Smith led to a corner, where Leighton Duncan of Deveronvale did extremely well to pull off an impressive goal line clearance. Early on it could be seen that the weather conditions were having an impact as each ball played seemed to have added whip, but both teams were coping well .
A break by Forsyth opened up an opportunity for a strike at goal, and after a good initial save by Athletic keeper Sonny Cain, Deveronvale player John Geddes opened up the scoring with a composed tap in to make it 1-0 to Deveronvale.
A response came shortly afterwards with Athletic captain Callum McKenzie cutting in from the left to arrow a great strike into the right side of the net to even the score, and bring Athletic back into the game.
With the wind behind Athletic, a lot of football was being played in the first part of the Deveronvale half, and some fine defending was on show as Samuel Cummings appeared very difficult for Athletic to get past. A break for Deveronvale started with Mark Tait making a storming run through the heart of the Athletic half, where the number 10 selflessly played in Mike Third, who sublimely lifted the ball over Athletic keeper Cain to put Deveronvale back in front.
Athletic again were quick to respond with both Jay Murphy and Ethan Smith showing good wing play down the right, combining well with one another. Smith was then caught fractionally late, but showed impressive character by quickly getting up and accepting the apologetic handshake of his opponent, a great show of sportsmanship by the players.
Murphy continued to look dangerous for Athletic, playing in Calum Reid for an opportunity which was quickly closed down by the continuously solid Deveronvale defence. Play then began to move further into the Athletic half and despite Athletics' Lewis Lawson twice breaking down play well the ball found its way to Deveronvale's Forsyth inches outside the box, where he had little hesitation to double his tally with a sweet strike.
Athletic were giving no sign of giving up however as McKenzie after beating his man put in a dangerous ball which ached for any kind of touch to direct it towards goal. As the ball was cleared a good battle was developing in the midfield with Athletic's Lawson and Deveronvale player Fergus Edwards vying for possession with solid play.
Athletics' Richie Troup showed some good touches as the half came to a close, neatly beating his man and moving forwards, but no team mate could latch onto his dangerous pass. The opposing number 2, Declan Smith then showed once more the strength of his teams' defence by smartly breaking up Athletics' right wing play, before referee Bob Annand signalled the end of the first half.
Half Time: ALC Athletic 1-3 Deveronvale FC
The second half got underway with Deveronvale earning a corner early on. This corner resulted in Cummings, after having had a good first half, latching on to the loose ball and finding the back of the net to further his teams' lead.
With more pressure coming from Deveronvale's rising confidence, Athletics' defence was being worked hard. Matthew Clark, vocal from the back led by example, calmly clearing any danger coming his way and with fresh legs coming on for Athletic they began to again look dangerous.
Angus Ashley and Taylor McBain, Athletics' substitutes then had their first touches, and both could have resulted in chances. Ashley being closed down by two Deveronvale players after a good run, and McBain's excellent ball just being too far infront of Murphy with goalkeeper Golias showing good judgement to come out and claim the ball.
Deveronvale's Edwards then found himself in space outside the box and was right to try his luck as his effort found the back of the net, to extend his team's lead.
Athletic, sensing that time was running out, carved out an opportunity for Ashley, who nicely slotted in the rebound after Golias had made an initial save, unfortunate for the keeper who had been having a fine morning.
Not to be outdone however Forsyth of Deveronvale found himself with space on the left wing, and seized the chance with a superb run and finish into the back of the net with a precise left footed finish, doubling his goal tally.
Quickly after play restarted, Lawson of Athletic earned his side a free kick in a dangerous area, and a drive by Murphy was only denied a certain goal by Golias getting down very well to his right post.
With what must have been the last kick of the game, the ball somehow ended up in the back of the Deveronvale net after a good ball in by Athletic's McBain created a scramble between Deveronvale's defence and Athletic's Ashley. It was unclear who got the final touch but it was what turned out to be a consolation goal, as referee Bob Annand after having good control of the affair signalled the end of the game.

Cove complete comeback in Scottish cup thriller

The road to Airdrie started in the North East and a typical cup tie was showcased at Portlethen Academy with Cove coming out on top winning 4-3 having had to come back twice. in what was a really frantic cup game and without criticising the referee it was a real surprise that this game ended up with 11 v 11 still on the park after some decisions which the official missed.
Cove had the 1st opportunity of the game after a great free kick came in by Conran Wilson which was headed goal wards by Cloewyn Viegas which just went inches wide. The visitors's 1st chance of the game was to result in a goal after Matthew Mitchell was brought down by Redha Nacef on his way to goal and perhaps the keeper was lucky to get away with a caution as Mitchell was storming down on goal. Craig Mackie took the penalty and placed it into the bottom left hand corner.
Westdyke had the confidence to go on and snatch another and they did just that after Ryan Spink went on a great run down the left wing before he flashed a cross into the box which was met superbly by Sean Reid who rallied the ball into the roof of the net. The community club outfit were in firm control of the game and nearly grabbed a 3rd after a good through ball was feeded into the feet of Matthew Mitchell who produced a 15 yard drive towards goal which was saved by Nacef.
From the 25th minute mark onwards Cove seemed to get back into the game and were awarded with a goal in the 37th minute after Westdyke didn't clear their lines and Ryan Sinclair was able to slot the ball past Eden Cooper. Just before the interval Cove made sure it was to be all square going into half time after Conran Wilson played a short pass into Neil Cooper who fought his way past two defenders before finding the bottom left hand corner from 20 yards.
Half Time: Cove BC 2-2 Westdyke BC
Cove were to have the first opportunity of the 2nd half after they pushed up into the Westdyke backline and Greg Pickard's goalbound effort produced a good parry away by Cooper. Neil Cooper then continued to pile the pressure onto Westdyke and managed to get the ball into his services who then cut inside before his 10 yard effort flashed over the bar.
After the hour mark the review of the game was that it was an exciting cup tie however when both teams have possession it seemed to be like pinball where a pass from A to B would be blocked by a player however they was still to be end to end chances. Westdyke then re-took the lead after Craig Mackie was brought down in the box and then took the penalty himself to get his brace finding the bottom left hand corner with his spot-kick.
Into the last 20 minutes and it was all starting to heat up and Cove managed to pull level again thanks to a great free kick from Liam Burnett from 20 yards which found the bottom right hand corner giving Cooper no chance. Would there be extra time or would a team go on and win?
The visitors then tried to get themselves back into the lead after Ryan Spink fed a great ball into the box which was met by Stuart Mearns however great reflexes by Nacef denied Westdyke to take the lead again. The final clear chance of the game resulted in the winner after a free kick came in from Aaron Nicol which in unfortunate circumstances for Westdyke it was knocked into their own net by Andrew Davidson to complete what was two comebacks for Cove.

Coach Greg Moir is delighted with the start to the season saying "I think the morale in the squad is high and we are all getting on really well together, we won't be getting too carried away as it's only September."
Mr Moir spoke about the 3-1 victory over Dyce and said "I think we are playing Dyce at the right time and they got caught out, it's only September and there is still a lot more games to go."
Albion have signed Cameron Cheyne, Laurie Cunningham, Sam Robertson, Thomas Reid and Matthew Cumming and Greg said that they have been terrific. "We had four in for pre season and one just signed and they have been terrific to work with, they have been chipping in with goals in our 1st 3 games.
In their opening day win against Peterhead BC Phoenix Laurie Cunningham scored four, Matthew Cumming scored a hat trick and Sam Robertson also netted. The treble quartet then added to that by each getting a goal to their name in a 10-0 win away to Colony Park before Cunningham also scored against Dyce on Sunday.
Moir thinks that the competitiveness has gone up this season and added that a couple of his guys have went to Lewis United, "The competitiveness has certainly gone up this season, Lewis have strengthened and the likes of Paul Lawrie Foundation are there or there abouts, Fraserburgh are also good and have two excellent strikers."
Greg added "The Peterhead game was a bit one sided and we just played well on the day, it was a bit of a shellshock for Peterhead, on the day we delivered and it was a good performance from us. Peterhead had the hardest start to the season coming away to Albion followed by a home game against league champions Dyce BC, we won't be taking them for granted when we go up to Peterhead."
Albion reached the Scottish cup final at Airdries Excelsior stadium and last May at the Division two stadium goalkeeper Cameron Jarvie produced a great performance for the Aberdeen based side along with defender Lewis Paton.
The reds start their Scottish Cup adventures again this Sunday when they travel to Banchory. Greg looked ahead to the game saying "It will be a difficult place to go to, we played them in a couple of cups last season, you find it tough going to places such as Banchory as we are more used to 3G surfaces like the one we have at Spain Park as you pass the ball better on these type of pitches, we will obviously be going out for the win."
